A somewhat literary pattern used mainly in writing and formal speech to describe emotions, reflections or memories triggered each time the action occurs. With a single verb (見るにつけ, 思うにつけ) the main clause usually expresses a spontaneous feeling or thought, with endings such as 思い出される, 感じられる or 〜思いがする; the fixed expressions 何かにつけ(て), 何事につけ and the paired AにつけBにつけ freely take actions (何かにつけて文句を言う). Unlike the neutral たびに, the single-verb use is tied to feelings and reflections.
Note that after a single verb (見るにつけ etc.) the main clause normally expresses a spontaneous feeling or thought rather than a deliberate action; the fixed expressions are not bound by this.
Note that the verb before につけ is usually one of perception or thought, such as 見る, 聞く, 思う or 考える, but the pattern is not limited to seeing and hearing.
- 〜につけてもN2The two patterns take the same attachments and register, and are basically interchangeable in the sense of 'whenever... a feeling naturally arises'. 「につけても」 adds 「も」, carrying the nuance of 'even on each such occasion'; after 「何事につけても」, expressions like commands can follow.
- 〜につけ〜につけN2「〜につけ〜につけ」 must be attached as a pair to two words of the same class (nouns, verbs, or い-adjectives), meaning 「whether A or B...」; it often appears in set phrases like 「いいにつけ悪いにつけ」. It does not mean 'every time', so the two are not interchangeable.
- たびにN3「たびに」 emphasizes 'every single time'; the preceding element is not limited to perception verbs, and the following clause can be a habitual action or a plain fact. Nouns take 「のたびに」, and its register is neutral. When expressing a feeling something evokes, the two are often interchangeable.
- ことにN2「ことに」 attaches to words of feeling or evaluation such as 「驚いた」 and 「残念な」, stating the feeling first, with the following sentence describing the fact or conjecture that caused it. 「につけ」 expresses that a feeling naturally arises whenever one encounters something, with the feeling in the following clause. They are not interchangeable.
- ものがあるN2「ものがある」 is used at the end of a sentence to indicate that something has a certain quality or that the speaker has a certain feeling, with a neutral register. 「につけ」 connects two clauses and expresses that seeing or thinking of something evokes a feeling, and is more literary; the two are not interchangeable.
The core of 「につけ」 is that whenever one encounters or thinks of something, a feeling naturally arises, expressed in the following clause. 「につけても」 is basically interchangeable with it, only adding the nuance of 'even on each such occasion'; 「〜につけ〜につけ」 must be used as a pair meaning 'whether A or B', not 'every time'; 「たびに」 emphasizes that something happens every time, is not limited to perception verbs in the preceding element, and can be followed by habits or facts; 「ことに」 states the feeling first and then the facts, and 「ものがある」 appears at the end of a sentence to express a quality or feeling — neither expresses 'every encounter triggers a feeling'.
