- 2So extreme that it produces an opposite or unexpected result, often with かえって.Ex. 1

It is used in both speech and writing to stress that something goes beyond a reasonable or expected level. It often sets up a consequence, such as disbelief, discomfort or failure, in the following clause. It differs from あまり + negative, which means 'not very', and from あまりにも, which adds extra emphasis.
Learners often confuse あまりに ('excessively') with あまり + negative, which means 'not very'.
Do not treat あまりに as a plain substitute for とても, because it implies the degree is beyond what is normal or acceptable.
Note that the あまりに clause gives the cause and the following clause gives the result, as in あまりに静かで、かえって落ち着かない。
- あまりにもN3「あまりにも」 is the emphatic form of 「あまりに」: the meaning is the same, but the tone is stronger and more exclamatory, and the two are interchangeable when modifying a predicate or introducing a result. However, the pattern 「あまりの+noun」 cannot be replaced with 「あまりにも」.
- あまりN3「あまり」 attaches after a noun+の or after a verb, as in 「心配のあまり」, and the preceding word is usually an emotion or feeling, giving it a more literary flavor; 「あまりに」, by contrast, goes before the predicate. When the noun expresses a feeling, 「あまりの暑さに」 can be rewritten as 「暑さのあまり」.
- すぎるN4「すぎる」 is a suffix that attaches to the masu-stem of verbs and to adjective stems, as in 「静かすぎる」, whereas 「あまりに」 is an adverb placed before the predicate. When expressing 'too…', the two are often interchangeable and are frequently used together, as in 「あまりに高すぎる」.
- ほどN3「ほど」 attaches after verbs, adjectives, or nouns and illustrates a degree through a concrete or exaggerated example, without necessarily carrying the judgment of 'excessive'; 「あまりに」 is a preposed adverb that stresses excess. The two cannot be directly interchanged, and 「ほど」 can also mean 'about/approximately'.
- 極まる・極まりないN1「極まる・極まりない」 attach after na-adjective stems to mean '… to the utmost', in a literary style with a stiff tone; 「あまりに」 is a preposed adverb meaning 'too/excessively' in a neutral register that often introduces a result. The two cannot be directly interchanged.
- の極みN1「の極み」 attaches only to nouns and states that an emotion or state has reached its peak, in a formal, literary style that works with both positive and negative evaluations; 「あまりに」 is a neutral-register adverb implying 'excessive' that often introduces a result. The two cannot be directly interchanged.
あまりにも is a more emphatic version of あまりに, while あまり alone usually pairs with a negative to mean 'not very'. すぎる attaches directly to a predicate to mark excess, ほど expresses degree by extent or comparison, and 極まる・極まりない and の極み are formal N1 expressions for the utmost degree.
