くらいのものだ

- 3Singles out X as about the only person or thing to which a statement applies, often in the frame 〜のは…くらいのものだ.

Used in both conversation and writing to give a subjective assessment of how little something amounts to or how few cases apply. It often appears with limiting words such as 単なる, with 〜でも, and in the frame 〜のは…くらいのものだ. Its tone depends on context. It can be dismissive when shrinking a claim, or admiring when stressing that only X can do something.
Note that the pattern is not always belittling: この難問を解けるのは彼くらいのものだ praises him as about the only one capable.
Do not confuse it with くらいなら, which means 'rather than doing X' and expresses a preference, not a limit.
- 〜にすぎないN2In the meaning "merely/no more than...", these two are largely interchangeable, but 「にすぎない」 leans formal and has a calm tone without necessarily being derogatory. It cannot replace 「くらいのものだ」 when expressing "only X can..." via 「〜のは〜くらいのものだ」.
- でしかないN2「でしかない」 attaches to nouns and na-adjectives, not directly to verbs; it can also express restriction in the 「〜のは〜」 form and emphasize positive feelings. The two are interchangeable in the sense of "nothing more than...".
- というところだ / といったところだN1「というところだ」 can also convey "at most just about...", but its focus is giving a modest estimate of quantity or degree, and it can summarize one's current stage; it lacks the restrictive usage of "only X can...", attaches to nouns or numeral+quantity expressions like 「三人」「十枚」, and carries a weaker nuance of looking down on something.
- せいぜいN3「せいぜい」 is an adverb placed before numerals/quantities or nouns, often paired with 「ぐらい」, and can be used together with 「くらいのものだ」 in the same sentence to strengthen the "at most" nuance; it also means "as much as possible," but by itself cannot express the restrictive "only X can...".
- くらいならN1「くらいなら」 follows the first item to introduce the second, meaning "rather than..., would prefer...", used for making choices between options; 「くらいのものだ」 appears at the end of a sentence to give a limiting or low evaluation such as "only..." or "at most...". Their meanings differ, so they cannot substitute for each other.
〜にすぎない and でしかない state the limitation 'nothing more than' more flatly, while くらいのものだ adds a personal evaluation or singles out X as about the only case. というところだ / といったところだ gives a rough estimate of a level; せいぜい is an adverb meaning 'at most' that can co-occur with it; くらいなら is unrelated and means 'rather than X, I'd prefer…'.
