Used in everyday conversation and neutral writing when estimating a maximum. The speaker presents the figure as a ceiling ('no more than this'), even if the number itself is large in absolute terms. It can combine with ぐらい/くらい, だろう, or a concessive 〜ても clause. It differs from sentence-final patterns such as 〜にすぎない or というところだ because it is an adverb placed before the quantity. It can also appear together with them.
Do not use せいぜい to emphasize that an amount is impressively large; it frames the figure as a ceiling, meaning 'no more than' that.
Note that the 'as much as you can' sense, as in せいぜい頑張って, can sound sarcastic or condescending depending on tone.
Learners should place せいぜい before the quantity it limits, not at the end of the sentence.
- 1.くらいのものだN1「くらいのものだ」 is a sentence-final expression that attaches to nouns or verbs in plain form; in the "at most" sense it is close to せいぜい, and the two can combine as 「せいぜい〜くらいのものだ」. It can also use the pattern 「〜のは〜くらいのものだ」 to mean "the only X is...", but it has no "do one's best" meaning.
- 2.というところだ / といったところだN1「というところだ」 is a sentence-final expression that attaches to nouns or numerals to mean "roughly about that much", and it can also sum up the current stage; せいぜい is an adverb placed before a number, so the two occupy different positions and are often used together. The "do one's best" meaning has nothing to do with it.
- 3.〜にすぎないN2「にすぎない」 is a sentence-final expression that attaches to nouns, verbs, etc., and is written/formal in style; せいぜい is an adverb placed before a number or noun to express an upper limit, and it also has a "do one's best" meaning. The two cannot be swapped, and they are often combined as 「せいぜい〜にすぎない」.
- 4.でしかないN2「でしかない」 attaches to a noun or the stem of a な-adjective as a sentence-final expression to assert "is nothing but", and it can also emphasize positive feelings; せいぜい is an adverb placed before a number, etc., to estimate an upper limit, and it also has a "do one's best" meaning. When expressing an upper limit, the two can be used together in tandem.
せいぜい is an adverb that sets an upper limit before a quantity. くらいのものだ, というところだ/といったところだ, 〜にすぎない, and でしかない are sentence-final expressions that present something as 'only' or 'no more than' that. せいぜい can combine with them, as in せいぜい3000円というところだ.
