ではあるまいか
Expresses the speaker's cautious conjecture or suspicion that something is probably the case: 'Isn't it perhaps that…?', 'I suspect that…'. It is a literary equivalent of ではないだろうか and leans toward the affirmative despite its negative form.

A written, somewhat literary pattern found in essays, editorials, novels and analytical writing, where the writer wants to put forward a view or suspicion without asserting it outright. It carries the same meaning as the everyday ではないだろうか but sounds more formal and reflective. It sits between mere doubt and firm conclusion.
Learners often read it as a negative statement; it actually suggests that the thing probably IS the case.
Note that verbs and い-adjectives need の before では, as in あるのではあるまいか.
Do not use it in casual conversation, where ではないだろうか or じゃないかな sounds natural.
- ではないかN4ではないか is more colloquial and, besides conjecture, can express confirmation, discovery, or invitation; when expressing conjecture or a proposal as in べきではないか, it is interchangeable with ではあるまいか, though ではあるまいか is more literary and stiff. It cannot be replaced when expressing surprise, seeking agreement, or making an appeal with the volitional form.
- まいN2まい itself expresses negative conjecture or negative will; as in 子供ではあるまい ('surely not a child'), it leans negative, but adding か to form ではあるまいか flips it toward an affirmative-leaning conjecture, so the two cannot be swapped.
- ではあるまいしN1ではあるまいし means 'it's not as if...' and, after negating the preceding item, adds a command, advice, or criticism with a reproachful tone in colloquial speech; ではあるまいか is an affirmative-leaning conjecture or proposal in a written style, so they are not interchangeable.
- でなくてなんだろうN1でなくてなんだろう is a strong rhetorical assertion that 'this is exactly X,' full of emotion, and attaches only to nouns; ではあるまいか is a tentative conjecture or implicit proposal with broader attachment, and their degrees of certainty differ, so they cannot be swapped.
- に違いないN3に違いない is a confident conjecture meaning 'it must be,' usable in both speech and writing; ではあるまいか leaves room for doubt and can also implicitly make a proposal, so they are not a good fit for each other. Note that に違いない attaches to verbs and い-adjectives without の.
Unlike the neutral, common ではないか (which can also make emphatic assertions), ではあるまいか is a literary, tentative conjecture. It is affirmative-leaning, unlike plain まい (negative conjecture or intention) and ではあるまいし ('it's not as if…', giving a reason for criticism). It is also far softer than the rhetorical certainty of でなくてなんだろう and the confident judgment of に違いない.
