Usage

Neutral in register and common in both speech and writing, especially in advice, instructions, and explanations of requirements. The main clause is typically an evaluation or requirement such as 必要だ, 大切だ, かかる, or 〜なければならない. Unlike ために, which can be followed by concrete actions someone takes, purpose には mainly introduces statements about what a goal requires.

Watch out

Do not follow purpose には with a specific completed action such as 〜に行った; use ために for that.

Learners should use the dictionary form before purpose には, not the ます form or past form.

Easily confused with
  • ためにN3When both express purpose, the second clause of には states a required condition or an evaluation, while ために can state an actual action; when narrating something already done, ために is normally used rather than には. ために can also express a reason, and attaches to nouns with 「の」.
  • ならN4なら takes the preceding clause as a premise to offer a suggestion or judgment, and attaches to the plain form of verbs and adjectives and to nouns; には expressing purpose is similar, but focuses on stating the condition needed to achieve the purpose or an evaluation of it.
  • にとってN3にとって only attaches to nouns and is close to the second meaning of には ('for...'), and the two are often interchangeable when the second clause is an evaluation; it has no usage attaching to the dictionary form of a verb to express purpose, and can modify nouns as 「にとっての」.
  • ように/ようなN3ように/ような expresses metaphor, example, or 'just as...'; it attaches to nouns with 「の」, with 「ような」 modifying nouns and 「ように」 modifying verbs and adjectives; its meaning differs from the purpose or object-of-evaluation senses of には, so the two are not interchangeable.
  • のにN4のに usually expresses concession ('even though...'), carrying dissatisfaction or regret, and can appear at the end of a sentence, a meaning には lacks; however, when のに attaches to the dictionary form of a verb to express use, as in 「勉強するのに便利だ」, it is interchangeable with purpose-expressing には.

Purpose には is followed mainly by statements of necessity or evaluation, whereas ために can be followed by any deliberate action; ように marks a desired state, often with potential or non-volitional verbs, なら sets up a topic or condition for advice, and にとって marks a standpoint much like sense (2) of には. のに often expresses an unexpected contrast ('even though'), but dictionary form + のに can also mark a goal with its requirements (この資格を取るのに、かなりの勉強時間が必要だ), where it tends to focus on the time, cost, or means involved, while には more readily introduces advice and conditions such as 大切だ or 〜なければならない.
