ば
- 1If a condition is met, a certain result follows; the focus is on the condition as what brings the result about.Ex. 1
- 2If a hypothetical state holds, the speaker will act accordingly.Ex. 2
Contraction: in casual speech ければ/れば may shorten(なければ→なきゃ; 行けば→行きゃ)

A neutral conditional used in both speech and writing, typical for general conditions, advice, and statements about how to achieve an outcome. Compared with たら, ば puts more weight on the condition itself as what leads to the result. With a past main clause, ば is limited to uses such as discovery (行ってみれば、店は閉まっていた) or past habits, rather than plain one-time sequences.
Learners should avoid ば with an action-verb condition when the main clause is a request, command, or intention; たら is usually more natural there.
Learners should use たら, not ば, for a plain one-time past sequence such as "when I went, I saw…".
Note that いい becomes よければ, not いければ.
- たらN4たら is the most common in speech; its following clause can take commands, requests, or volition. It can also mean doing the second action after the first is completed, which ば generally cannot, and is preferred for unexpected discoveries (past-tense second clause). When the condition leads to a natural result, ば and たら are often interchangeable.
- とN5と can also express enumeration and a shared counterpart. As a conditional it attaches to the dictionary form and is often interchangeable with ば when stating regularities; however, と emphasizes immediate succession, can narrate discoveries or events happening one after another in the past tense, and its following clause generally cannot take volition or requests.
- ならN4なら typically takes up the other person's topic as a premise to give advice or judgment, and the action in the following clause can precede the condition. Verbs and い-adjectives take the plain form; nouns and な-adjectives do not add だ (学生なら). It is unsuitable for regularities like 「春になれば暖かくなる」.
- としたら / とすればN3としたら/とすれば corresponds to the hypothetical use of ば but stresses 'supposing for the sake of argument'; the following clause is usually conjecture, a question, a judgment, or a necessary conclusion drawn from it, and it does not express advice or regret. It attaches to the plain form, with nouns and な-adjectives taking だ.
- 〜ば〜ほどN2〜ば〜ほど is formed by taking the ば-form (for な-adjectives and nouns, なら/であれば) and then repeating the same word plus ほど (the first half may be omitted), meaning 'the more..., the more...'. ば only states that the second clause follows once the first is met, with no sense of proportional change, so the two cannot be interchanged.
たら is broader and freely allows requests, intentions, and one-time past events; と expresses automatic or habitual consequences; なら picks up a topic or assumption from context. としたら/とすれば stress a purely hypothetical supposition, and 〜ば〜ほど uses ば in a fixed frame meaning "the more…, the more…".
