Usage

Used in both speech and writing to reflect on the past, comment on the way things naturally are, or express what people generally ought to do. The recollection sense often co-occurs with よく or 昔. The general-truth sense often co-occurs with 本当に or やはり. It sounds more reflective and generalizing than a plain statement.

Watch out

Note that the recollection sense describes repeated past habits, so do not use it for a single, one-time past event.

Learners sometimes use ものだ for personal preferences; it expresses general tendencies or norms, not individual opinions.

Note that the 'should' sense sounds like a general norm and can feel preachy when directed at a specific person.

Easily confused with
  • たものだN5「たものだ」corresponds to the reminiscence use of 「ものだ」; the two are interchangeable when recalling repeated past events. It can also attach to 「かった」 and 「だった」, and can recall a deeply moving experience with strong emotion, but it does not express exclamations about general truths or give admonition.
  • ものがあるN2「ものがある」neither exclaims about general principles nor recalls the past or gives admonition. It subtly points out that something 'has a certain... quality' or expresses the speaker's feelings, often in the pattern 「Xには〜ものがある」, and generally cannot be swapped with 「ものだ」.
  • ものではないN2For the admonition sense, 「ものではない」means 'should not...' by common sense, close in meaning to 「ない形+ものだ」. It can also attach to the potential form to mean 'cannot possibly...', but it has no uses for recalling the past or expressing emotion.
  • ことだN3「ことだ」is close only to the admonition sense of 「ものだ」, but it gives advice about the listener's specific current situation, often paired with 「〜たいなら」, with a more direct tone; general common sense uses 「ものだ」. Nostalgic recollection of the past can only use 「ものだ」.
  • ものだからN2「ものだから」expresses a reason with an excusing, 'it's understandable' tone, and is somewhat colloquial; it can be followed by a second clause or end the sentence with the second clause omitted. 「ものだ」at the end of a sentence expresses reminiscence, emotion, or admonition and has no causal meaning, so the two cannot be interchanged.
  • ものN2「もの」placed at the end of a sentence states a reason in the speaker's defense, meaning 'because... you know', with a strong colloquial flavor, often as 「んだもの」 or 「もん」. It carries no sense of reminiscence, emotion, or admonition and cannot be interchanged with 「ものだ」.

たものだ is simply the past-habit use of ものだ, and ものではない is its negative norm form ("one shouldn't"). ことだ gives direct advice to a specific person, ものがある expresses a feeling that something has a certain quality, ものだから gives a reason or excuse, and sentence-final もの is a casual personal justification.
