It is common in both speech and writing when a speaker wants to reframe how something is described or explained. It is often followed by むしろ to highlight the preferred description, as in XというよりむしろY. The contrast is between two characterizations of the same thing, not between two separate things.
Learners sometimes reverse the order. The less accurate description comes before というより, and the more accurate one comes after it.
Note that というより can either soften X or reject it outright. Context decides whether X is partly true or simply wrong.
- 1.むしろN2「むしろ」 is an adverb placed before B. Besides correcting a statement, it can also choose between two courses of action (as in 「AよりむしろBほうがいい」), which 「というより」 cannot do. The two are often combined as 「AというよりむしろB」.
- 2.というかN2「というか」 carries a weaker sense of comparison and focuses on thinking as you speak, with a casual, conversational tone; it can be shortened to 「ていうか」 or 「てか」. In conversation the two are often interchangeable when correcting a statement, but 「というか」 is not appropriate in formal writing.
- 3.ほうがましだN1「ほうがましだ」 makes a negative choice between two undesirable options, often pairing with 「くらいなら」 or 「よりは」 and conveying resignation or dislike. 「というより」 only corrects whether a description is apt and expresses no choice, so the two are not interchangeable.
- 4.というか〜というかN1「というか〜というか」 pairs two similar phrasings without judging which is more accurate, simply expressing difficulty in finding the right words; it often leads into 「とにかく」 to wrap up, or can simply stop there in conversation. 「というより」 clearly picks B over A, so the two cannot be swapped.
むしろ is an adverb that marks the preferred alternative and often appears together with というより. というか is a more casual rephrasing ('I mean, or rather'), while というか〜というか lists several impressions without choosing one, and ほうがましだ says that one undesirable option is less bad than another.
