Usage

An emotive pattern that stresses how great a feeling or degree was. It appears in essays, speeches, and narration, and also in heartfelt everyday speech (e.g. どんなに心配したことか). It looks like a question but works as an exclamation, and unlike といったらない or 限りだ it expresses the extreme through a どんなに/どれほど frame rather than stating it directly.

Watch out

Do not read or use this pattern as a real question; it is an exclamation and expects no answer.

Learners often forget the degree word like どんなに or どれほど, which makes the sentence sound unnatural.

Note that non-past な形容詞 take な or である before ことか, not だ, while the past form だった is fine.

Easily confused with
  • といったらないN1「といったらない」directly expresses reaching an extreme. It needs no correlative like 「どんなに」, usually attaches to nouns or adjective stems plus 「さ」, expresses degree only (not frequency), and is neutral in register; in speech it can contract to 「ったらない」. Its sentence structure differs, so it cannot be swapped in directly.
  • 限りだN1「限りだ」attaches only to emotion adjectives or emotion nouns (e.g. 「光栄の限りだ」), not verbs, and takes no correlative like 「どんなに」; it directly states the speaker's own feeling. 「ことか」can attach to verbs and conveys degree or frequency, so the two generally cannot be interchanged.
  • 極まる・極まりないN1「極まる・極まりない」attaches directly to na-adjective stems to mean 'extremely…', is mostly used for negative evaluations, and sounds stiff. It takes no correlative like 「どんなに」, does not attach to verbs or i-adjectives, and does not express frequency, so the two generally cannot be interchanged.
  • の極みN1「の極み」attaches to nouns (e.g. 「感激の極み」) and means an emotion or state has reached its peak, or rates something as extremely…; it is stiff and formal in tone. 「ことか」attaches to predicates, requires a correlative like 「どんなに」, and can also exclaim about high frequency. Their structures differ, so they cannot be directly substituted.
  • ことにN2「ことに」is placed at the start of a sentence or after a topic, attaching to emotion or evaluation words like 「驚いた」 or 「残念な」: it first states the speaker's feeling, then the following clause describes the fact or conjecture. 「ことか」comes at the end of the sentence with a correlative like 「どんなに」 to express exclamation. The two cannot be interchanged.
  • んばかりにN1「んばかりに」attaches to the negative stem of a verb and figuratively means 'as if about to…' or 'as if to say…'; it is a metaphorical description of degree, not an exclamatory pattern. 「ことか」attaches to plain forms at the end of the sentence with a correlative like 「どんなに」 to express exclamation, so the two cannot be interchanged.

ことか exclaims degree through an interrogative frame (どんなに…ことか), whereas といったらない, 限りだ, 極まる・極まりない, and の極み state an extreme directly after an adjective or noun. ことに gives an evaluative preface ('what is surprising is…'), and んばかりに means 'as if about to…'.
