A somewhat formal, literary way to state a strong personal feeling. It is common in speeches, letters and writing, typically with emotion words like 嬉しい, 寂しい, 心細い, 羨ましい and 残念. Compared with てならない or てたまらない, it sounds more composed and deliberate than an uncontrollable surge of feeling.
Do not attach 限りだ to non-emotional adjectives such as 高い or 大きい; it only works with words describing feelings.
Note that it expresses the speaker's own emotion and is not normally used to describe a third person's feelings.
Learners should not confuse this pattern with other uses of 限り, such as the conditional meaning "as long as."
- 1.の極みN1「の極み」attaches only to nouns and cannot take adjectives like 「寂しい」; besides emotions, it can also evaluate things, as in 「贅沢の極み」 or 「無責任の極み」. With emotion nouns like 「感激」, the two are roughly interchangeable.
- 2.の至りN1「の至り」attaches only to nouns, mostly fixed Sino-Japanese words like 「光栄」, 「恐縮」, and 「汗顔」; it does not take adjectives and is more formal and ceremonial than 「限りだ」, often used in speeches and humble self-references. There is also the idiom 「若気の至り」.
- 3.極まる・極まりないN1「極まる・極まりない」attaches directly to the stem of な-adjectives without 「な」, and does not take い-adjectives; it is mostly used to harshly criticize someone's attitude or a situation, as in 「無礼極まりない」. When expressing one's own feelings like 「残念」, it is close in meaning to 「限りだ」.
- 4.てならないN2「てならない」emphasizes that feelings or thoughts well up involuntarily and cannot be suppressed, and it can also attach to the て-form of verbs, as in 「思われてならない」; 「限りだ」simply states the strength of one's feelings, does not attach to verbs, and cannot be replaced when expressing 'can't help but...'.
- 5.てたまらないN2「てたまらない」emphasizes that a feeling is so strong it is unbearable, with a neutral register; besides emotions, it can express physical sensations like pain, cold, or heat, and can also attach to verb て-forms and 「たくて」. With emotion adjectives it is close in meaning to 「限りだ」, but the latter is more formal.
の極み and の至り attach to nouns (感激の極み, 光栄の至り) and are even more formal and set-phrase-like, while 極まる・極まりない usually attach to な-adjective stems for strong, often negative judgments (失礼極まりない) rather than personal feelings. てならない and てたまらない use the て-form, sound more conversational, and stress feelings or sensations the speaker cannot suppress.
