Usage

Used in both speech and writing to stress that a minimal action, state or amount alone is enough for the result that follows. The result is often a feeling or natural reaction, as in 見るだけで or 考えるだけで. Unlike plain だけ, which simply limits something to 'only X', だけで typically links X to an outcome or to the means by which something is done.

Watch out

Learners sometimes attach it to the て-form, as in 見てだけで; use a plain form instead, such as 見るだけで or 見ただけで.

Note that the second clause often uses spontaneous or passive-type expressions such as 癒される or 収まる.

Note that with nouns, as in 一人だけで行く, the で marks means or manner, so no further result needs to follow.

Easily confused with
  • 〜さえ〜ばN3「〜さえ〜ば」is a hypothetical pattern meaning 'as long as ... , ...' that highlights the single minimum condition, and it can take 「のに」to express regret, whereas 「だけで」mostly describes results or feelings in actual situations. Note that 「さえ」must be paired with the ば-form — for verbs, say 「飲みさえすれば」.
  • 〜てさえいればN2「〜てさえいれば」is hypothetical and stresses that it is enough for a certain state to simply continue; it attaches to the て-form or to 「で」. 「だけで」instead describes actual situations, where merely doing something brings about the following clause or something is accomplished with only one means, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
  • だけN5「だけ」simply limits scope or quantity ('only, just') and can also mean 'as much as possible' (「できるだけ」), while 「だけで」uses a small premise to bring about a following result or feeling ('just by ... , ...'). The two generally cannot be directly interchanged.
  • ばN4「ば」expresses a supposition or necessary condition and is used for stating rules or giving advice; it also appears in patterns like 「ばいい」and 「ばよかった」. 「だけで」instead stresses that a small effort is already enough to produce a result and mostly describes actual feelings, so the two are generally not directly interchangeable.
  • さえN3「さえ」means 'even ...', citing an extreme case to imply the same for the rest, and it often pairs with negative expressions. 「だけで」, meaning 'just by ... , ...', stresses that a small first clause is still enough to bring about the result, so the two are generally not interchangeable.

だけ only limits something to X, while だけで says X alone is enough to cause a result or is the sole means used. 〜さえ〜ば, 〜てさえいれば and ば are conditionals ('if only X', 'as long as one keeps doing X', 'if X'), and さえ means 'even'; だけで instead describes a result that follows from a minimal action, often one that actually happens.
