Usage

Used in both conversation and writing to highlight that an action is underway at a specific moment. It typically answers questions about what one is doing now, or explains why one cannot respond immediately. Compared with plain ている, it zooms in on the ongoing process at that exact point in time.

Watch out

Learners often confuse it with 〜たところだ, which means an action has just been completed, not that it is in progress.

Note that plain ている can describe a resulting state or a habit, while ているところだ only describes an action in progress right now.

Do not use it with stative verbs like ある or 分かる, which do not describe an ongoing action.

Easily confused with
  • ているところN4「ているところ」 can also be followed by 「だった」, indicating that an action was in progress at a certain point in the past, and by 「に/へ」 or 「を」, indicating that something else happens, or that one is seen or interrupted, while the action is underway. When it ends a sentence with 「だ/です」, it is the same as 「〜ているところだ」, and the two are interchangeable.
  • 〜るところだN3「〜るところだ」 attaches to a verb's dictionary form and indicates that the action is about to begin and has not yet started — 「食べるところだ」, for example, means 'about to eat.' 「〜ているところだ」 attaches to the て form plus 「いる」 and indicates that the action is already in progress, so the two describe different stages and cannot be used interchangeably.
  • 〜たところだN3「たところだ」 attaches to a verb's た form and indicates that the action has just ended, while 「ているところだ」 indicates that it is in progress. The two refer to different stages and cannot be swapped: 「今食べているところだ」 is 'eating right now,' and 「今食べたところだ」 is 'just finished eating.'
  • 最中にN3「最中に」 can attach to a noun plus 「の」 or to a verb in its 「ている」 form, and the second clause is typically something that suddenly happens at that moment and interrupts the first. 「ているところだ」 attaches only to verbs and mostly functions as a predicate describing the situation at this very moment; when 「最中だ」 is used as a predicate, the two are similar.
  • ているN5Besides expressing an action in progress, 「ている」 can also express a resulting state, as well as habits and repetition. It is close to 「ているところだ」 only in the 'in progress' sense, where the two are generally interchangeable, but the latter more strongly emphasizes being 'in the middle of the process right now.'

〜ているところだ is the same idea as ているところ and marks an action in progress, whereas 〜るところだ means one is about to start and 〜たところだ means one has just finished. 最中に stresses being in the very midst of something, typically when an interruption occurs, and plain ている covers progress, resulting states and habits without singling out the present moment.
