A somewhat literary pattern found mainly in writing, narration and formal speech. It is largely limited to set combinations such as 涙ながらに, 昔ながらの and 生まれながらの. Unlike ordinary ながら, it describes a lasting state or condition rather than two simultaneous actions.
Learners should not attach it freely to any noun; it mostly appears in fixed combinations like 涙ながら and 昔ながら.
Do not confuse this pattern with ordinary ながら meaning 'while doing'; here it expresses a state, not simultaneous action.
Note that ながらに modifies a verb, while ながらの must be followed by a noun.
- ながら / いながら / ながらもN3「ながら」attaches to verbs, adjectives, and nouns, and expresses either two simultaneous actions by the same subject or a concessive 'although... yet...' meaning; its register is neutral. 「ながらに / ながらの」is limited to a small number of fixed collocations, expresses the continuation of a state or something remaining as it is, is literary, and the two cannot be interchanged.
- ままN4「まま」also expresses an unchanged state, but it can freely attach to the verb た form / ない form, adjectives, 「noun + の」, and so on, with a neutral register. 「ながらに / ながらの」is limited to fixed collocations such as 「涙」 and 「昔」, leans literary, and the two cannot be freely interchanged.
- ままにN2「ままに」expresses acting in obedience to someone else's wishes or following one's own heart, and can attach to the verb dictionary form, the passive form, and 「noun + の」, with a neutral register. 「ながらに」expresses the continuation of a state or something remaining as it is, is limited to fixed collocations, and leans literary, so the two cannot be interchanged.
- 〜つつもN3「つつも」expresses a concessive 'knowing full well... but still...' meaning and attaches to the verb ます form (e.g., 「知りつつも」). 「ながらに / ながらの」does not express concession; it only expresses the continuation of a state or something remaining as it is, is limited to fixed collocations such as 「涙」 and 「昔」, and the two cannot be interchanged.
- なりに / なりのN1「なりに」expresses acting or existing in a manner befitting one's status, ability, or circumstances, and can attach fairly freely to nouns and adjectives, with a neutral register. 「ながらに」expresses the continuation of a state or something remaining as it is, is limited to fixed collocations, and leans literary. The two cannot be interchanged.
Plain ながら / ながらも marks simultaneous actions or concession, and 〜つつも is concessive, whereas ながらに / ながらの describes an accompanying or unchanged state in fixed expressions. まま and ままに are productive patterns for leaving a state as it is or acting as something dictates, while なりに / なりの means 'in its own way' or 'befitting' something.
