A somewhat literary expression found in writing, essays, and reflective speech. With verbs, the main clause usually expresses a spontaneous feeling or recollection, such as 思い出される or 胸がいっぱいになる. The set phrases 何事につけても and 何かにつけても can also introduce habitual behavior, as in 何事につけても文句を言う ('complain about everything'). It is close in meaning to につけ, and the added も gives slight emphasis.
Note that after a verb, the main clause normally expresses a spontaneous feeling or recollection, not a deliberate action or request.
Learners should note that the preceding verb is usually one of perception or thought, such as 見る, 聞く, 思う, or 考える.
Do not use it for gradual proportional change; that meaning requires につれて.
- につけN2The two take the same conjugations and register and are basically interchangeable in the sense of 'every time..., a feeling naturally arises.' However,「につけ」lacks the 'every single time, too' nuance that「も」adds, cannot be followed by commands or volitional expressions, and also appears in the set phrase「何かにつけ」('at the slightest excuse').
- 〜につけ〜につけN2「〜につけ〜につけ」must come as a pair attached to two words of the same category, meaning 'whether A or B, both...'. It is not interchangeable with「につけても」in its 'every time..., a feeling wells up' sense and is close in meaning only to「何事につけても」.
- たびにN3「たびに」is register-neutral: its first clause can describe any kind of recurring event, and its second clause can be a habitual action.「につけても」is more written in style, usually attaches to verbs of perception or thought, and mostly takes an emotional second clause; the two are often interchangeable when the first clause uses verbs like「見る」or「聞く」and the second clause is a feeling.
- ごとにN3「ごとに」has an objective tone, attaches to nouns, numerals, and verbs, and expresses regular repetition or division by unit. Only「verb + ごとに」resembles「につけても」, but its second clause is usually an objective result with no emotional coloring, so the two should not be swapped.
- につれてN3「につれて」shows the two clauses changing gradually in step with each other and is register-neutral, whereas「につけても」is more literary, meaning that each time you see, hear, or think of something an emotional association arises, or, as「何事につけても」, 'no matter what.' The two are not interchangeable.
につけ is nearly identical in meaning, and につけても adds slight emphasis. 〜につけ〜につけ pairs two contrasting items to mean 'whether A or B'; たびに and ごとに mark neutral repetition with any action and carry no emotional coloring; につれて expresses proportional change ('as A changes, B changes').
