Neutral pattern used in everyday conversation and self-introductions to talk about hobbies and preferences. It extends the noun pattern 〜は〜が好きです to actions: の turns the verb phrase into a noun so it can take が. The verb's own object keeps its usual particle, as in 本を読む.
Do not attach 好き directly to a verb; say 読むのが好き, not 読む好き.
Learners often mark the activity with を; the nominalized verb phrase takes が before 好き.
Note that 好き is a な-adjective, so its negative is 好きではない, not 好きない.
- のが上手N5「のが上手」evaluates how well someone does something and is often used to praise others; 「のが好き」only says whether you like something, and works naturally for both yourself and others. They attach the same way but differ in meaning and cannot be swapped. To say you are good at something, 「のが得意」is preferred.
- のが下手N5「のが下手」evaluates poor skill at doing something, regardless of whether you like it; 「のが好き」is about interest and preference. Both add 「のが」after the verb, but their meanings cannot be swapped, and they can be used together, as in 「歌うのが好きだが下手だ」.
- 〜は〜が好きですN5「〜は〜が好きです」is the basic pattern for expressing likes: when the object is a noun, it attaches directly, as in 「寿司が好きです」; when the object is an action, you must add 「の」— which is exactly this pattern.
- ことN3「こと」is a general formal noun that turns verbs, adjectives, and the like into nouns serving as subjects or objects. 「ことが好き」and 「のが好き」are basically the same in meaning and interchangeable, but 「こと」is more formal; in predicate sentences like 「趣味は〜ことです」, only 「こと」can be used.
- のN5「の」is a particle whose most common use connects two nouns to show possession and the like, as in 「私の本」; in 「のが好き」, it is used after a verb to turn the verb phrase into a noun — one of its fixed uses — so the 「の」in the two cases functions differently.
〜は〜が好きです takes a plain noun (サッカーが好き), while のが好き is used for actions (サッカーをするのが好き). のが上手 and のが下手 share the same structure but describe being good or bad at an activity rather than liking it; こと can often replace の here (読むことが好き), and の is the general nominalizer this pattern is built on.
