Usage

This pattern belongs to written and formal language such as news reports, analyses, official statements and academic writing. It softens an assertion by framing the writer's judgment as a natural, impersonal conclusion. Compared with と考えられる it sounds slightly more indirect and reserved, and it is far less certain than に違いない or に相違ない.

Watch out

Do not use it in casual conversation about everyday matters; it sounds stiff and bureaucratic there.

Learners sometimes attach it directly to a noun; insert である first, as in 原因であるものと思われる.

Note that 思われる here is spontaneous rather than passive; it conveys the writer's own presumption, not what others think.

Easily confused with
  • とされるN1「とされる」 reports the common view or presumption of society or academia, not the speaker's own judgment, and can also mean something is officially designated as having a certain status; 「ものと思われる」 is the speaker's own tentative conjecture. A noun can attach directly to 「とされる」.
  • と考えられるN2「と考えられる」 is likewise used for objective written inference, and the two are interchangeable in most cases, but it is less tentative and emphasizes reaching a judgment through reasoning. After a noun, add 「だ/である」, and 「と考えられている」 can express 'it is generally thought that'.
  • に相違ないN2「に相違ない」 expresses the speaker's strong subjective conviction—'it must be...'—with far greater certainty than 「ものと思われる」. Both are written language, but their degrees of confidence differ, so they should not be swapped. A noun attaches directly to 「に相違ない」.
  • に違いないN3「に違いない」 conveys strong conviction and works in both speech and writing, while 「ものと思われる」 is tentative and leans written, so they should not be swapped. After nouns and な-adjectives, 「に違いない」 attaches directly, while 「ものと思われる」 takes 「である」 (な-adjectives may also take 「な」).
  • はずだN4「はずだ」 makes a confident inference based on reasons or common sense, with higher certainty than 「ものと思われる」, and is common in both speech and writing; 「はずだった」 can express a former expectation. After a noun, use 「の」 rather than 「である」.

とされる reports a view held by others or by authorities, and と考えられる is a more neutral, widely used statement of logical inference; ものと思われる is a softer, more reserved presumption. に違いない and に相違ない express strong conviction, and はずだ expresses a confident expectation drawn from reasoning, whereas ものと思われる stays tentative.
