Usage

It is common in everyday conversation and writing to evaluate something against a scale such as price, age, effort, or size. It is less judgmental than くせに and less formal than にもかかわらず. Unlike だけあって, which confirms an expectation, わりに always signals a mismatch between the premise and the result.

Watch out

Do not use わりに when the result matches expectations; use だけあって or だけに for that meaning.

Learners often forget の after nouns and な after な-adjectives before わりに.

Note that わりに used alone as an adverb means 'relatively' or 'fairly', which is a different use.

Easily confused with
  • 〜わりにはN2「〜わりには」is just 「わりに」with は added: in the connective use meaning 'contrary to what you would expect,' the meaning and attachment are identical and the two are interchangeable, though 「〜わりには」makes the contrast sharper. It has no adverbial use, however — for 'comparatively, relatively,' only 「わりに」works.
  • にしてはN3「にしては」is close only to the first sense of 「わりに」and has no adverbial use. Nouns attach directly (「子供にしては」); the first clause is usually a status, age, number, or established fact, and the second clause cannot express volition, hope, or a command.
  • だけあってN2「だけあって」indicates that the result is worthy of the first clause's status, effort, and so on — 'as expected of...' — the exact opposite of 「わりに」's 'contrary to expectations,' so the two cannot be swapped. After a noun, attach 「だけあって」directly without の, and it has no adverbial use.
  • だけにN2「だけに」means 'precisely because..., all the more...': the second clause is intensified by the first, whereas with 「わりに」the second clause simply fails to match the expectation based on the first, so they are not interchangeable. Nouns attach directly to 「だけに」, while a noun in the present affirmative form takes の before 「わりに」.
  • くせにN3「くせに」is close only to sense 1, but it carries strong blame or contempt, is used to criticize others, appears mostly in speech, and usually has the same subject in both clauses; 「わりに」is plain in tone and works whether the result is good or bad. When you are praising someone, 「くせに」cannot be used in its place.
  • にもかかわらずN2「にもかかわらず」leans toward written style and expresses only 'contrary to expectation': the first clause need not be a standard for measuring degree, and it can also open a sentence as a connective. 「わりに」is stylistically neutral and focuses on judging whether things match, and it has an adverbial sense that 「にもかかわらず」lacks.

「わりには」is nearly identical to 「わりに」but with a sharper contrastive tone; 「にしては」takes a status or premise as the standard, while 「わりに」focuses on a mismatch in degree. 「だけあって」means the result lives up to the expectations raised by the first clause, 「だけに」stresses 'precisely because of that' (the second clause can even be a reaction like disappointment), 「くせに」often carries blame or displeasure, and 「にもかかわらず」is more formal, stressing that the fact runs counter to the first clause.
