あっての

JLPT N1approx.Neutral
Meaning

Expresses that B exists or works because A is there. A is indispensable to B, and B could not exist without A. It is used in the frame AあってのB, usually to acknowledge what something owes to A.

Examples
1
A company is nothing without its employees. Without employees, a company cannot function.
2
お客様きゃくさまあっての仕事しごとです。お客様きゃくさまの満足まんぞくが何なんより大切たいせつです。
We owe our work to our customers. Customer satisfaction matters more than anything else.
Formation
Noun+あっての+Nounoften closing as 「noun+あっての+noun+だ/です」
Usage

A formal, set expression often heard in speeches and business settings, and in statements of gratitude or principle. It presents A as essential to B and credits A as the foundation of B. Unlike なくしては, which states the negative consequence of lacking A, あっての affirms A's importance directly and links two nouns.

Watch out

Learners sometimes reverse the nouns; the indispensable thing comes before あっての and the thing that relies on it comes after.

Do not attach あっての directly to verbs or adjectives; both sides are normally nouns.

Note that あっての modifies the following noun, so a noun must come right after it, typically closing with だ or です.

Easily confused with
  • 1.
なくしてN1「なくして」also works from the negative side, saying 'without A, it won't work,' and is typically followed by a negative, impossible, or difficult clause; it leans toward written style, attaches to nouns, takes 「ことなくして」 for actions, and need not be followed by a noun. The meanings are close, but you must rework the sentence structure to swap the two.
  • 2.
なくしてはN1「なくしては」states negatively that 'without A, B is impossible'; it follows nouns, requires the following clause to be negative or express impossibility, does not modify nouns, and leans toward written style. The meaning is similar, but the sentence structure differs, so the two cannot be directly substituted.
  • 3.
てこそN2「てこそ」attaches to the te-form of verbs, or to nouns and na-adjectives plus 「でこそ/であってこそ」, stressing 'only by doing...' and taking a sentence of judgment or evaluation afterward; since 「あっての」modifies a noun with a noun, the two cannot be directly interchanged.
  • 4.
ばこそN1「ばこそ」attaches to the hypothetical form of verbs and adjectives, or to a noun plus 「であれば」, joining two clauses to stress a reason or motive in formal, dignified written language; 「あっての」only takes the noun-to-noun pattern 「AあってのB」, stressing A as an indispensable prerequisite, so the two cannot be directly interchanged.
  • 5.
からこそN2「からこそ」follows a clause and stresses 'it is precisely for this reason that...' in what comes after, with a complete sentence following it; 「あっての」can only stand between nouns, stressing A as the prerequisite B cannot do without, so the two cannot be directly interchanged.

なくして and なくしては say that B is impossible without A and are followed by a negative outcome, whereas あっての positively asserts that A is essential to B. てこそ, ばこそ and からこそ emphasize an action, condition or reason within a clause, while あっての links two nouns directly.
