Usage

Common in conversation and also used in writing. The judgment rests on what the speaker knows about the person's character, whether or not the listener shares that knowledge. The main clause is usually an inference or expectation, often ending in はずだ, だろう, に決まっている or containing きっと. Unlike だけあって, which comments on a result already seen, ことだから typically draws an expectation about something not yet confirmed.

Watch out

Learners should attach it to people or groups with a known character, not to ordinary objects or events that have no character to judge from.

Note that the following clause is normally the speaker's judgment or guess, not a plain statement of an already observed fact.

Do not confuse it with ことだ used for advice (e.g., 早く寝ることだ); the two patterns are unrelated.

Easily confused with
  • 1.
からすると / からすればN2「からすると」 attaches directly to nouns and can infer from all sorts of things like statements or atmosphere, and can also mean 'from the standpoint of...'; 「ことだから」 requires 「の」 and infers only from knowledge of a familiar person's character or habits, so they are generally not interchangeable.
  • 2.
に決まっているN2「に決まっている」 is used at the end of a sentence to assert 'surely...' based on common sense or subjective judgment, and is colloquial; 「ことだから」 states its basis beforehand with 「noun+の」. They cannot be swapped, but can be used together: 「彼のことだから、来るに決まってる」.
  • 3.
はずだN4「はずだ」 infers 'should be...' from various reasons or common sense, and can also express an expectation that fell through; 「ことだから」 only appears in the first clause, basing itself on a familiar person's habits, and often pairs with 「はずだ」, so they are not interchangeable.
  • 4.
だけあってN2「だけあって」 evaluates an already-realized outcome as living up to one's reputation, usually with admiration, and its first clause is not limited to people; 「ことだから」 makes a guess or judgment from knowledge of someone's habits and often takes 「はずだ」. They are generally not interchangeable.
  • 5.
からこそN2「からこそ」 emphasizes 'precisely because of this reason...' and can attach to verbs, adjectives, and 「noun+だ」; 「ことだから」 only attaches to 「noun+の」 and makes conjectures based on knowledge of a person. The two are generally not interchangeable.
  • 6.
ものだからN2「ものだから」 explains a cause with an apologetic tone and leans colloquial; 「ことだから」 guesses what someone will do based on knowledge of them. Their connections differ: the former takes verbs, adjectives, or 「noun+な」, while the latter takes 「noun+の」. They cannot be interchanged.

Unlike からすると / からすれば (judging from some evidence or viewpoint), ことだから grounds the judgment specifically in a person's known character, and it often pairs with はずだ or に決まっている, which express the resulting expectation rather than its basis. だけあって evaluates a result already seen as fitting someone's status, ものだから gives a personal reason or excuse, and からこそ emphasizes that something is the very reason; からこそ can also support a prediction (慎重な彼だからこそ、きっと確認してくれる), but it attaches to clauses in general, whereas ことだから uses 名詞 + の and inherently points to the person's familiar nature.
