Neutral in register and common in both speech and writing. It is used to state a judgment, estimate or opinion based on observed evidence such as someone's words, appearance or an atmosphere, typically with だろう, と思う or らしい at the end. With a person noun it shows that person's standpoint, overlapping with から見ると, though からすると leans more toward evidence for an inference.
Note that the main clause should express a judgment or guess, not a request, command or plain statement of fact.
Do not attach it directly to a plain verb form; use a 名詞 or a clause ending in ところ before it.
- 1.から見るとN2Both senses of「から見ると」are close to「からすると」, and the two are interchangeable in most cases. 「から見ると」highlights the viewing perspective more, while「からすると」focuses more on the basis for judgment; variants include「から見れば」「から見たら」「から見て」.
- 2.〜から見ればN2「から見れば」also attaches to nouns and can also express a standpoint or a basis for inference; the two are interchangeable in most cases. It emphasizes the 'eye' or viewpoint more — as in「子供の目から見れば」— and often implies that the view would change from a different standpoint.
- 3.にしたらN2「にしたら」corresponds only to the 'standpoint' sense of「からすると」; it attaches to nouns denoting people or organizations and centers on the feelings of the person concerned, and in this sense the two are mostly interchangeable. It cannot be used when「発言」「雰囲気」, etc. serve as the basis of judgment.
- 4.から言うとN2「から言うと」specifies the standpoint, viewpoint, or standard on which a judgment is based, and it generally does not attach directly to nouns denoting people — say「彼の立場から言うと」instead. It is interchangeable with「からすると」for expressing a standpoint, but「からすると」is more natural when inferring from concrete signs.
- 5.からしてN2When expressing a basis for inference, the two are mostly interchangeable, but「からして」stresses that this one point alone is enough to draw a conclusion. 「からして」can also cite the most basic item and generalize to the whole ('to begin with, ... already ...'), while for seeing things from a person or from a standpoint「からすると」is generally used.
から見ると and 〜から見れば present a viewpoint, から言うと presents a criterion or angle of evaluation, and にしたら expresses only a person's standpoint, often with empathy, whereas からすると more often marks concrete evidence for an inference. からして can also mark evidence for a guess (声からして女性だろう), but it tends to single out one telling feature and also means 'starting with X', citing a typical example, often in criticism.
