It is used when you want to show respect to the giver; the beneficiary is the speaker or their side, and the giver is marked by が: 先生が教えてくださった. ていただく describes the same event from the receiver's side, with the giver usually marked by に (私は先生に教えていただいた; から is also possible when stressing the source of information or things). The familiar てください comes from てくださる.
The ます form of くださる is くださいます, not くださります.
Do not mix up the particles: 先生が教えてくださった marks the giver with が, while 先生に教えていただいた usually marks the giver with に.
- 1.てくれるN4「てくれる」 is for givers you need not show special respect to (including your own family when talking to outsiders: 母が教えてくれた); when you want to show respect to the giver, use 「てくださる」.
- 2.〜ていただくN4「ていただく」 takes the receiver as subject (私は先生に教えていただいた), 「てくださる」 the giver (先生が教えてくださった): the same event seen from opposite sides.
てくださる is the honorific of てくれる, used when you want to show respect to the giver. ていただく is close in meaning but takes the beneficiary as subject, with the giver usually marked by に.
