A basic, neutral pattern used in both conversation and writing to express that a condition, real or hypothetical, does not affect the main clause. The main clause typically states something contrary to what the condition would lead one to expect. Compared with its confusables, ても is the default everyday form; the others differ mainly in register or nuance.
Do not attach だ before ても with な形容詞 or 名詞; use でも instead (静かでも, not 静かだても).
Learners sometimes use ても where たら or ば is needed; ても signals that the result goes against expectation, not that it follows from the condition.
Note that い形容詞 change い to くても (高くても), not 高いても.
- たってN3「たって」means basically the same as「ても」, but it is mostly used in casual speech and often carries a stronger concessive tone with emotions like defiance or resignation. It attaches to the た-form, with nouns and な-adjectives taking「だって」; it should not replace「ても」in formal writing.
- としてもN2「としても」attaches to the plain form (降るとしても、静かだとしても) and works like the hypothetical-concessive use of「ても」, so the two are interchangeable. However, it more strongly emphasizes 'granting for the sake of argument,' and the following clause is usually a volition, judgment, or assertion.
- にしてもN2「にしても」attaches to the plain form or nouns, but not the て-form. The following clause is usually an evaluation, assertion, or complaint, so it is not used for simply stating facts; in such contexts it can be swapped with「ても」. There is also a parallel usage「AにしてもBにしても」.
- といえどもN1「といえども」attaches to the plain form and has a solemn tone, mainly used in writing and speeches. The first clause often states a status, an extreme condition, or a minimal amount, and the second clause is usually a judgment such as prohibition, obligation, or negation.「ても」is neutral and general with few restrictions, and should not be replaced by「といえども」in speech.
- ともN2「とも」has the same meaning as「ても」and can also pair with question words to mean 'no matter.' But verbs take the volitional form (降ろうとも) and い-adjectives take the「かろう」form (高かろうとも), giving a resolute, solemn tone mostly found in writing.
- であれ / であろうとN1「であれ/であろうと」attaches only to nouns, question words, and な-adjectives, not to verbs or い-adjectives. Its meaning is close to「でも/であっても」and the two are often interchangeable, but it is more formal and literary, appearing mainly in regulations and speeches.
たって is a casual spoken equivalent of ても, while としても, にしても, and とも often carry a more hypothetical or assumptive nuance, and としても and とも are also more formal. といえども and であれ / であろうと are formal or literary concessives, so ても remains the neutral, everyday choice.
