Neutral in register and common in everyday speech and writing, either to complain that things go wrong at the worst possible moment or to defend someone the speaker trusts. Unlike に限らず ("not only X") and に限る ("X is best"), に限って singles out one case where things turn out against expectation, or where wrongdoing is unthinkable.
Note that sense (1) typically describes an unwelcome or ironically timed outcome, so it can sound odd for a simply happy coincidence.
Note that sense (2) is usually followed by a strong denial such as はずがない or わけがない.
Learners often confuse に限って with に限らず, which means the opposite: "not limited to X."
- 1.に限らずN2「に限らず」means 'not limited to…; … also…' and expands the scope outward, often followed by 「も」 in the next clause. 「に限って」, by contrast, means 'of all times/things; only' and narrows the scope, so the two are opposite in meaning and cannot be swapped.
- 2.に限るN2「に限る」 usually appears as a sentence-final predicate meaning '…is best', and can also mean 'limited to', often seen in rules and notices. 「に限って」 must be followed by a predicate and has no 'best' meaning; only the 'limited to' sense is similar, but their positions in the sentence differ.
- 3.ばかりにN2「ばかりに」 expresses a cause leading to a bad result, and 「〜たいばかりに」 means doing something at any cost out of a strong desire. With the 'of all times' sense of 「に限って」, the preceding item is a time or occasion, and it only complains that things went against one's wishes without expressing cause and effect, so the two cannot be swapped; 「ばかりに」 leans toward written style.
- 4.ときたらN1「ときたら」 attaches only to nouns and pulls out a person or thing itself for an emotional comment, usually critical but sometimes admiring, with a strong colloquial flavor. It has no sense of 'of all times', trust, or limitation, and generally cannot be interchanged with 「に限って」.
- 5.こそN3「こそ」 is affirmative emphasis meaning 'precisely…', with none of the dissatisfied tone of 'of all times', and it does not require a negative in the following clause. It can follow case particles, and forms like 「てこそ」 and 「からこそ」 also exist; the two patterns generally cannot be interchanged.
に限らず means "not only X," and に限る means "X is best" or "limited to X," whereas に限って singles out one case where something unexpected happens or where wrongdoing is unthinkable. ばかりに marks a single cause of a bad result, ときたら introduces a topic in order to criticize it, and こそ simply emphasizes "precisely X" without the nuance of bad luck or trust.
