Polite. Compared with ませんか, ましょう puts the proposal directly and sounds more assertive, while ませんか invites by asking and leaves more room for the listener's wishes. A typical exchange opens with 〜ませんか and, once the other person agrees, continues with じゃ、〜ましょう. ましょうか, by contrast, consults the listener or offers help. Teachers and hosts often use 〜ましょう as a gentle instruction (教科書を開きましょう).
Opening with 〜ましょう when inviting someone you do not know well, or a superior, can sound pushy; start with 〜ませんか.
To ask someone to do a specific thing, use てください; 〜ましょう is for proposing joint action, or for a teacher's gentle instruction to listeners.
- 1.ましょうかN5「ましょうか」 proposes by asking ("Shall I ...?" / "Shall we ...?"), leaving the decision to the listener; 「ましょう」 directly proposes doing something together, and can also state outright that the speaker will do it (私がご案内しましょう).
- 2.ませんかN5「ませんか」 invites through a negative question and defers more to whether the listener wants to; 「ましょう」 puts a proposal directly, often after the listener has accepted, or to make a fresh proposal (じゃあ、また今度行きましょう).
ましょう directly proposes doing something together, or directly states that the speaker will do it. ましょうか proposes or offers help by asking, leaving the decision to the listener; ませんか is an invitation that defers more to the listener's wishes.
