Used in both speech and writing to stress that a particular reason is the key one behind a situation, often presenting that reason from an unexpected angle. It is commonly paired with sentence-final のだ/んです. Plain から simply states a cause, whereas からこそ adds strong emphasis, much like こそ attached to a reason clause.
Do not use からこそ for ordinary, neutral reasons; it signals that this reason is special or decisive.
Note that nouns and な-adjectives need a copula form such as だ or だった before からこそ; 学生からこそ is wrong.
Do not replace から with ので here; ので cannot combine with こそ in this pattern.
- ばこそN1「ばこそ」has the same meaning but attaches to the ba-form (e.g., 「思えばこそ」「学生であればこそ」) and carries a formal, strongly written register; in everyday conversation use 「からこそ」, since replacing it with 「ばこそ」would sound stiff.
- てこそN2「てこそ」means the second clause holds only when the first action is done, stressing an indispensable condition rather than a cause; it attaches to the verb te-form, while nouns and な-adjectives take 「でこそ/であってこそ」. The two cannot be interchanged.
- だけにN2「だけに」emphasizes that the result matches the premise or goes even further; the second clause is usually an impression or evaluation, and it is often used when expectations fall through and disappointment is all the deeper. 「からこそ」is unsuitable for simply stating the cause of a negative result, and nouns attach directly to 「だけに」without 「だ」.
- だけあってN2「だけあって」means 'as expected of'; the second clause is an evaluation in line with expectations, and it does not take volitional or command forms. 「からこそ」emphasizes that this very reason is the cause, often an unexpected one; nouns attach directly to 「だけあって」, and な-adjectives take 「な」.
- こそN3「こそ」is a focusing particle that attaches to nouns, noun + case particle, the verb te-form, and so on, to emphasize a particular element or to mean 'only ... does ...'; 「からこそ」is its use after 「から」, specifically emphasizing the reason.
- からN5When 「から」expresses a cause, it merely states the reason, and the following clause often takes requests, commands, or expressions of volition; it also has a separate 'from' usage marking a starting point. 「からこそ」corresponds only to its cause meaning and adds emphasis, so plain 「から」is enough for generally stating a reason or the cause of a negative result.
から states a reason without emphasis, こそ emphasizes a word in general, ばこそ is a literary equivalent of からこそ, and てこそ means 'only by doing X,' marking a condition rather than a reason. だけあって links a fitting, usually positive result to someone's status or effort, and だけに presents a result as all the more so given X; からこそ, by contrast, highlights the reason itself.
