たら〜たで
- 1Even when a situation (often one that was hoped for or seen as a solution) comes about, it brings a separate problem or downside of its own.Ex. 1
- 2If a situation happens, that is fine in its own way, and one will simply deal with it then.

Common in conversation and in general observations about life, often contrasting two situations that each have drawbacks (e.g., having no money vs. having money). The second clause usually introduces a new concern, such as worrying about results once an exam is over. Unlike simple concessive patterns such as ても, it echoes the same word to highlight that the realized situation creates its own separate issue.
Do not use two different words in the slots; the same verb or adjective must be repeated.
Learners sometimes end the second part with ら instead of で; the correct form is 〜たら〜たで.
- にしてもN2「にしても」expresses general concession meaning 'even if..., still'; it does not require repeating any word and its register is neutral. In contrast,「たら〜たで」requires repeating the same word, emphasizing either that new trouble arises when the situation actually occurs or that 'it would be fine anyway,' and is colloquial, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
- にしろ / にせよN2「にしろ/にせよ」means 'even if..., still' or serves to enumerate items, with the following clause expressing an unchanged judgment, and it leans toward written style. In contrast,「たら〜たで」requires repeating the same word, stressing either that separate problems arise after the situation becomes real or that it makes little difference, and is colloquial, so they are generally not interchangeable.
- てもN4「ても」is ordinary adversative concession ('even if / whether... still'); it needs no repeated word and works in both spoken and written language. In contrast,「たら〜たで」repeats the same word, highlighting either that new issues emerge once the situation materializes or that it hardly matters, and being colloquial, direct substitution is inappropriate.
- としたら / とすればN3「としたら/とすれば」introduces a tentative assumption whose following clause carries speculation, judgment, and the like, needing no repeated word, with a neutral register. In contrast,「たら〜たで」repeats the same word and speaks of extra trouble arising after the situation comes true—or that it simply does not matter—so they cannot be interchanged.
- たってN3「たって」conveys concession meaning 'even if..., still'; it does not require repeating the same word, and it can also combine with question words and「いくら」to express 'no matter...' (such as 'no matter how much'). In contrast,「たら〜たで」must repeat the same word, stressing either that fresh trouble appears once the situation shows up or that it would be acceptable anyway, so they are generally not interchangeable.
にしても, にしろ / にせよ, ても and たって are concessive ('even if / whether'), and としたら / とすれば sets up a hypothetical assumption. By contrast, たら〜たで repeats the same word to say that the situation, once it happens, brings its own separate issue or is acceptable in its own way.
