A formal, literary expression used in speeches, letters, messages of congratulation, and written statements to convey the speaker's deep, sincere, ongoing feelings. It typically describes the speaker's own feelings, often positive wishes for others. Unlike patterns of spontaneous or uncontrollable emotion, it stresses a steady, heartfelt feeling that does not fade.
Do not use it with physical sensations or passing states such as 痛い or 眠い; it pairs with verbs of heartfelt feeling like 願う or 祈る.
Note that it usually expresses the speaker's own feelings, not a description of a third person's emotions.
Learners should avoid it in casual conversation, where it sounds stiff and overly formal.
- てならないN2「てならない」describes feelings, sensations, or thoughts that well up spontaneously and cannot be suppressed, and it can also attach to adjectives (「くてならない」「でならない」); 「てやまない」expresses a long-held wish or respect and attaches only to verbs. The two are generally not interchangeable.
- てたまらないN2「てたまらない」is neutral in register and expresses feelings that are momentarily too strong to suppress, or physical sensations such as pain, heat, or cold. It can attach to adjectives, verbs, and the 「たい」form; the subject is usually the speaker, and 「らしい」or 「ようだ」is often added when talking about others.
- を禁じ得ないN1「を禁じ得ない」attaches to nouns (such as 「涙」or 「怒り」) and expresses emotions that surge up uncontrollably when one is moved by something, with a strongly literary flavor; 「てやまない」attaches to the て-form of verbs and expresses a long-lasting wish or feeling. The two are generally not interchangeable.
- 限りだN1「限りだ」attaches to emotive adjectives or emotive nouns and conveys the speaker's strong feelings, as in 「寂しい限りだ」; 「てやまない」attaches to the て-form of verbs and expresses a long-held wish or respect. Both are fairly formal, but they cannot be interchanged.
- てしょうがないN3「てしょうがない」is colloquial and expresses feelings or desires that cannot be suppressed in the moment, or physical sensations such as heat or pain. It can attach to verbs, adjectives, and 「たくて」; for a formal wish, use 「てやまない」, and the two are generally not interchangeable.
- 〜てしかたがないN3「〜てしかたがない」is neutral in register and indicates that a mental or physical feeling is too strong to hold back, and it can attach to verbs and adjectives; 「てやまない」attaches only to verbs, solemnly expresses a long-held wish, and is not used for physical sensations, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
てやまない expresses a sincere, lasting feeling (usually a wish or hope) in formal style. てならない, てたまらない, てしょうがない and 〜てしかたがない describe spontaneous, often uncontrollable or unbearable feelings and sensations, the latter three being more conversational. を禁じ得ない means being unable to suppress an emotion triggered by a situation, and 限りだ stresses an extreme emotion felt at the moment, typically with adjectives such as 嬉しい.
