A somewhat literary expression used in writing such as essays and articles, and in reflective speech. It compares people, situations or periods and foregrounds a sharp, salient difference between them. That difference is often evaluative, but it can also be a factual one, such as a clear gap in figures. Compared with neutral markers like に比べて, it puts more weight on how striking the contrast is.
Learners often drop the の after a clause; say 明るいのに引き換え, not 明るいに引き換え.
Do not confuse the のに in のに引き換え with concessive のに ('although'); here の nominalizes the clause.
Note that it contrasts two actual situations, so the second clause normally states a fact rather than a request, command or intention.
- に比べてN3「に比べて」 is a neutral, objective comparison that can compare differences in degree or quality and is common in speech; 「に引き換え」 requires a stark contrast between the two sides, usually carries emotional praise or criticism, and is mostly written-style. 「に引き換え」 can usually be replaced by 「に比べて」, but the reverse works only when the contrast is sharp.
- 反面N2「反面」 describes two opposite sides of the same person or thing, with an objective tone; 「に引き換え」 contrasts two different things and usually carries emotional evaluation, so the two cannot be swapped. 「反面」 attaches directly to verbs and adjectives without 「の」, and its register is neutral.
- に対してN3「に対して」 is close to 「に引き換え」 only in its contrast sense; it states differences objectively with a neutral register, while 「に引き換え」 requires a sharp contrast and often carries emotional praise or criticism. When the contrast is clear, 「に対して」 can be used instead, but the evaluative coloring becomes weaker.
- 逆にN2「逆に」 is an adverb or conjunction with a neutral feel, used in both speech and writing; it contrasts two opposite sides and can also mean 'instead' (an unexpected reverse result). 「に引き換え」 attaches to nouns or after 「の」, is mostly written-style, carries emotional praise or criticism, and does not express this 'instead' meaning.
- わりにN3「わりに」 takes the first clause as the standard and says the actual situation does not match expectations; its register is neutral, and it can also work as an adverb. 「に引き換え」 is a sharp contrast between two things and is mostly written-style. The two generally cannot be swapped.
に比べて and に対して compare or contrast more neutrally, whereas に引き換え stresses that the difference is striking, often with an evaluative tone. 反面 contrasts two sides of the same subject, 逆に signals a reversal as an adverb or conjunction, and わりに marks a result that departs from what a standard would lead one to expect.
