Usage

A neutral connector used in both speech and writing, common for explaining circumstances, giving excuses, and making polite requests. Compared with から, ので presents the cause-and-effect link as more objective and matter-of-fact rather than as the speaker's own assertion. It therefore tends to sound softer and more polite, and is often chosen with superiors or in formal situations.

Watch out

Do not put だ before ので with nouns or な-adjectives; say 学生なので, not 学生だので.

Note that ので cannot be used in the sentence-final pattern 〜のは…からだ; say 遅れたのは雨だったからです, not 雨だったのでです.

Note that ので sounds unnatural before blunt commands like 〜しろ; から fits those better.

Easily confused with
  • からN5As a cause marker, から is close to ので and often interchangeable, but it sounds more subjective and direct: commands, prohibitions, and volition follow it more naturally, and it can come across as forceful toward superiors. Nouns and な-adjectives take だから, and から can also mark a starting point.
  • て / でN5て/で simply links two events in sequence without explicitly marking a reason, and what follows is usually a result, emotion, or state, never a request, command, or volition, whereas ので can be followed by a request. Nouns and な-adjectives take で, not なので.
  • ものでN1もので is mostly used to excuse or apologize for one's own lateness, mistakes, and the like, implying there was a good reason. It doesn't suit objective cause-and-effect statements or giving advice to the listener, so a ので sentence can't always be rephrased with もので.
  • ためにN3Besides cause, ために also expresses purpose, a meaning ので lacks. When marking cause the two are similar, but ために is more formal and generally isn't followed by requests or commands, and nouns take のために rather than なので.
  • せいでN3せいで blames a bad outcome on a cause with a tone of dissatisfaction. Its main clause is usually something that has already happened, not a request or suggestion, and while it can replace ので for bad situations, it adds a note of complaint.
  • おかげでN3おかげで stresses that a result is thanks to someone or something and expresses gratitude, turning ironic when used for a bad result; its main clause states only the result and can't be a request. For good results it can be replaced with ので, though the gratitude is lost, and nouns take の before it, not な.

から sounds more subjective and assertive and can end a sentence (〜からです), while て/で links cause and result implicitly and, though the cause can be direct (火事で家が焼けた), is not normally followed by requests or volitional clauses. もので is a more formal, apologetic explanation of unavoidable circumstances; ために marks cause in formal writing; せいで blames a cause for a bad result; おかげで credits a cause for a good result.
