A neutral pattern common in both speech and writing. It describes substitution for a person, object, or action, or a trade-off such as a favor given in return for a benefit, or a drawback offset by an advantage. Unlike the more formal 〜に代わって, which expresses substitution only, 代わりに also covers exchanges and compensations.
Learners should keep の after a noun in this pattern, as in 母の代わりに; 親代わり is a separate compound meaning 'acting as a parent.'
Note that the substitution and exchange senses share one form, so context decides whether 'instead of' or 'in return for' is meant.
- 〜に代わってN3「〜に代わって」attaches only to nouns, taking 「に」 rather than 「の」, and sounds relatively formal. When standing in for another person it can be swapped with 「noun + の代わりに」, and it can also express something new replacing something old, but it cannot express exchange or the balancing of gains and losses.
- 一方でN3「一方で」 is close to 「代わりに」 only in the trade-off sense: 「代わりに」 stresses that good and bad points offset each other, each serving as the price of the other, while 「一方で」 only objectively contrasts or juxtaposes two sides—both sides can even be merits, and it can also contrast different subjects. A noun must take 「である」 before 「一方で」.
- 反面N2「反面」 matches only the trade-off sense of 「代わりに」, and in that use the two are often interchangeable. However, 「反面」 deals only with two opposing sides of the same subject and carries no sense of substitution or exchange; a noun takes 「である反面」, not 「の」.
- ためにN3「ために」 expresses purpose ('for the sake of') or reason ('because of'), a different meaning from 「代わりに」, so the two cannot be swapped: 「母のために」 means doing something for your mother's sake, while 「母の代わりに」 means doing it in her place.
- ついでにN3「ついでに」 means taking the opportunity of a main task to do something else along the way, so the two actions stand in a main-and-incidental relationship; 「代わりに」 expresses substitution, exchange, or gains and losses balancing out—the idea of 'trading this for that'—so the two cannot be interchanged.
〜に代わって is more formal and expresses only substitution, either a person taking over a role or one thing replacing another, without the exchange sense. 一方で and 反面 contrast two aspects of one thing rather than framing one as compensation for the other, ために expresses purpose or cause, and ついでに means doing something extra while taking the opportunity of another action.
