Neutral in register, it typically follows a clause describing a problem, often linked with けど or が, and then offers a consoling perspective. It is used when resigning oneself to an imperfect situation or comforting someone about one, and often ends in よ or と思う. Unlike ほうがましだ, it does not weigh two options. It simply highlights a positive aspect within the given situation.
Note that まし means 'less bad', not 'good', so the pattern implies the overall situation is still unsatisfactory.
Do not use だけましだ to praise something that is simply good; it needs a negative background to contrast with.
Learners sometimes drop な or である before だけ with な形容詞 and 名詞; say 静かなだけましだ, not 静かだけましだ.
- 1.ほうがましだN1「ほうがましだ」 picks the lesser of two undesirable options, often pairs with 「くらいなら」 or 「よりは」, and usually implies rejecting the first option. A noun takes 「の」 before 「ほうがましだ」 (Noun+の+ほうがましだ), and the two patterns are not interchangeable.
- 2.に越したことはないN2「に越したことはない」 expresses general common sense or advice that something is naturally best, whereas 「だけましだ」 evaluates what is at least acceptable in a less-than-ideal present reality, so they are not interchangeable. Nouns and な-adjectives attach to 「に越したことはない」 without 「な」.
- 3.だけのことはあるN2「だけのことはある」 is used after seeing an excellent result to acknowledge that it lives up to someone's status, effort, price, etc., often with 「さすが」, and 「だけのことはあって」 can lead into a following clause. It requires no unfavorable background, so it is not interchangeable with 「だけましだ」.
- 4.くらいならN1「くらいなら」 chooses between two options: the first is a situation one is unwilling to accept, and the second is the preferable course of action. 「だけましだ」 instead evaluates the present reality by pointing out what is still acceptable, so the two are not interchangeable.
- 5.としたら / とすればN3「だけましだ」 gives relative approval of a less-than-ideal present reality, while 「としたら/とすれば」 sets up a provisional hypothetical condition followed by a guess, judgment, question, or inevitable conclusion. The two are not interchangeable.
ほうがましだ and くらいなら choose the lesser of two bad options ('I'd rather B than A'), whereas だけましだ finds a saving grace within one situation. に越したことはない means 'it's best if', だけのことはある praises something as living up to expectations, and としたら / とすれば set up a hypothetical, so none of these carry the 'at least it could be worse' consolation.
