Used to criticize someone's pretentious or affected behavior, typically when describing another person's attitude disapprovingly. It appears in both conversation and writing. It often combines with words for status, knowledge, or refinement. Unlike ふりをする, which simply means pretending, ぶる focuses on showing off and putting on airs.
Do not use ぶる for neutral or sincere behavior; it signals an affected, showy attitude and carries a disapproving tone.
Learners should not assume ぶる always means faking; the person may truly have the status but flaunt it, as in 偉ぶる.
Note that ぶる conjugates as a 五段動詞, so the te-form is ぶって and the negative is ぶらない.
- ふりをするN3「ふりをする」is neutral 'pretending' and can attach to verbs, adjectives, and 「名詞+の」; 「ぶる」does not attach to verbs and refers to deliberately putting on an identity, appearance, or attitude, with a negative nuance. Pretending to sleep or pretending not to see can only use 「ふりをする」.
- びるN1「びる」describes looking like something, and can also mean an object becoming old (「古びる」); it is limited to a few fixed words, leans literary, and its connotation depends on context. 「ぶる」emphasizes deliberate posing or putting on airs. 「大人びる」≠「大人ぶる」; they are not interchangeable.
- めくN1「めく」indicates that seasons, words and actions, or an atmosphere naturally show a certain sign or suggestion, not done intentionally; it carries no inherent praise or blame, is mostly used in literary description, and has fairly fixed collocations. 「ぶる」is deliberate posturing with a negative nuance; they are not interchangeable.
- じみたN1「じみた」attaches only to nouns and describes a person or thing unconsciously taking on a certain look or atmosphere, not deliberately put on; it often carries a negative evaluation but is not always derogatory. 「ぶる」is intentionally striking a pose; the two are not interchangeable.
- がるN4「がる」describes a third party's feelings, sensations, or desires as observed from the outside; it does not imply deliberate acting and carries no criticism. It attaches to the stems of emotion/sensation adjectives and to 「たい」, but not to nouns. The two are not interchangeable.
- くせにN3「くせに」is a contrastive connective meaning 'even though...' and criticizes behavior that does not match one's status; it leans colloquial. 「ぶる」attaches to nouns and adjective stems to form a verb meaning to deliberately act a part. The two are not interchangeable, but can be used together, as in 「素人のくせに通ぶる」.
ふりをする is neutral pretending, while ぶる criticizes an affected show of a quality. びる and めく describe something taking on an appearance or showing signs of a quality, じみた criticizes something for smacking of an unwelcome quality rather than for showing off, がる shows outward signs of a feeling, and くせに criticizes a mismatch ('even though') rather than an affected pose.
