A formal, written expression found in news reports, narratives, and speeches. It often describes brave self-sacrifice (危険を顧みず) and sometimes stubborn or reckless behavior (反対も顧みず). The subject is a person who consciously decides to act, and the following clause describes that deliberate action.
Do not write 省みず here; 省みる means "reflect on oneself", while 顧みる means "take into consideration".
Note that the subject must deliberately ignore something; for mere circumstances like weather, use にもかかわらず instead.
Learners should avoid it for trivial matters; it implies serious danger, sacrifice, or strong opposition.
- 1.をものともせずN1「をものともせず」 emphasizes treating an obstacle as nothing and being utterly fearless, usually with a tone of admiration; the preceding element only needs to be some kind of obstacle, so even 「雨」 sounds natural. When praising someone for braving danger or opposition, 「をものともせず」 and 「を顧みず」 are interchangeable.
- 2.をよそにN1「をよそに」 can be swapped with 「を顧みず」 when ignoring other people's opposition or worries, but its nuance is one of standing aloof and remaining unmoved. It is not used for disregarding danger to oneself, though it can highlight a contrast with outside circumstances.
- 3.もかまわずN2「もかまわず」 is neutral in register, attaches only with 「も」, and typically means not caring about being watched, causing others trouble, or one's own image, often with a critical or surprised nuance. It is interchangeable with 「も顧みず / を顧みず」 when ignoring opposition, but for major matters such as danger, 「も顧みず / を顧みず」 is generally the one used.
- 4.を押してN1When the obstacle is opposition, 「を押して」 is interchangeable with 「を顧みず」; 「を押して」 stresses stubbornly pressing ahead despite obstacles such as illness, old age, or bad weather. It attaches only to nouns — it cannot follow 「動詞+の」 and has no emphatic form with 「も」.
- 5.にもかかわらずN2「にもかかわらず」 is purely a concessive meaning "even though ... , yet ...", and what follows need not be a deliberate action; 「も顧みず」 stresses that the doer knowingly and deliberately ignores danger, opposition, and the like. 「にもかかわらず」 can also attach to adjectives and serve as a sentence-initial conjunction.
をものともせず stresses boldly overcoming an obstacle, and を押して stresses pushing through a hardship such as illness. をよそに stresses indifference to others' worry, もかまわず is a more everyday "not caring about" (人目もかまわず), and にもかかわらず is a neutral logical "despite" that also attaches to clauses. を顧みず specifically means deliberately disregarding a risk or objection one should weigh.
