A written-style expression found in narratives, news reports and essays. It describes someone ignoring what others feel or say, or a warning, often with a note of criticism or detachment. The thing ignored is usually outside the subject, such as others' worries or external conditions, which sets it apart from patterns about pushing through one's own hardships.
Do not attach をよそに directly to a verb; nominalize the clause with の first, as in 心配しているのをよそに.
Note that the main clause normally describes an actual action or situation, not a request, command or the speaker's intention.
Learners should note that the ignored element is typically others' feelings or external circumstances, not one's own illness or danger.
- 1.も顧みず / を顧みずN1「を顧みず」can be interchangeable with 「をよそに」 when disregarding others' opposition, but it emphasizes knowingly and deliberately refusing to consider it. It is also used for disregarding one's own danger, and carries a note of praise when someone risks their life to save others; 「も顧みず」has the nuance of 'without even caring about...'.
- 2.をものともせずN1With 「をものともせず」, the preceding item is an obstacle such as difficulty or danger, emphasizing fearlessness and bravely overcoming it, with a tone of admiration, and it is generally not used about oneself; 「をよそに」means ignoring others' attitudes or external circumstances. Both can attach to 「反対」, but the nuance differs.
- 3.もかまわずN2「もかまわず」is neutral in register and relatively colloquial, often attaching to 「人目」「なりふり」「周りの迷惑」, meaning not caring about others' gaze, the trouble caused, or the occasion or one's own image, often with criticism or surprise. When the preceding item is others' opposition or warnings, the two are roughly interchangeable.
- 4.を押してN1「を押して」emphasizes holding out and persisting despite knowing there are obstacles such as opposition, illness, old age, or bad weather, often with praise, and attaches only to nouns. With 「反対」 both can be used, but 「をよそに」 leans toward treating it as nothing; when someone pushes on while sick, only 「を押して」 works.
- 5.にもかかわらずN2「にもかかわらず」only objectively expresses concession, 'even though... yet...', with no nuance of 'ignoring' or 'staying detached'; the preceding item can be any established fact, and verbs and い-adjectives attach directly. When the preceding item is opposition, warnings, and the like, the two can often be swapped.
をよそに treats others' concerns or external circumstances as irrelevant, while を顧みず and を押して stress deliberately pressing on despite risk, one's own condition or obstacles, and をものともせず admiringly describes boldly overcoming adversity. もかまわず is a more everyday "not caring about" something such as how one looks, and にもかかわらず is a neutral "despite" that simply states a contrast without implying that anything is being ignored.
