Used in both speech and writing to describe someone acting while disregarding something they would normally care about. It often implies mild disapproval or surprise, especially in set phrases like 人目もかまわず. However, the pattern itself only states disregard, so it can also describe selfless acts, as in 危険もかまわず人を助けた. Compared with も顧みず, it sounds more everyday.
Learners often forget to insert の after a verb or adjective. Say 注意するのもかまわず, not 注意するもかまわず.
Note that it often sounds critical, as with 人目もかまわず, but it can also describe selfless acts like 危険もかまわず人を助けた.
Do not confuse it with かまわない meaning 'it's fine'. もかまわず means 'without caring about'.
- 1.も顧みず / を顧みずN1「を顧みず」is strongly literary, and both 「を」and 「も」can attach to it. What is disregarded is typically major matters such as danger, opposition, health, or honor, and the nuance can be positive or negative depending on context. It can be interchangeable with this pattern when disregarding opposition, but sounds exaggerated for everyday trivial matters.
- 2.をよそにN1「をよそに」is somewhat literary; its core meaning is to ignore or pay no heed to what precedes it, which is usually others' attitudes or external circumstances such as 「心配」, 「期待」, 「反対」, or 「警告」. It can also express a contrast between something and its larger surroundings. 「なりふり」generally does not take 「をよそに」.
- 3.をものともせずN1With 「をものともせず」, the preceding item is an obstacle such as difficulty, danger, or opposition, and it carries an admiring tone in written language, attaching to nouns. 「もかまわず」focuses on ignoring others' gazes or the trouble caused to them and is often critical, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
- 4.を押してN1「を押して」is written-style, attaches only to nouns, and typically takes obstacles such as opposition, illness, old age, or bad weather. It emphasizes persisting by willpower despite knowing the difficulty, and is often used approvingly, whereas 「もかまわず」focuses on ignoring others' gazes or the trouble caused to them and is often critical.
- 5.にもかかわらずN2「にもかかわらず」merely expresses an objective concession meaning 'even though... yet...', with no nuance of the subject deliberately ignoring something, and is mostly used in written language. Verbs and い-adjectives attach directly without adding 「の」. The two are generally not interchangeable.
も顧みず is more formal and typically involves disregarding serious matters like danger, one's own safety, or family, while をよそに stresses indifference to others' worry or expectations. をものともせず explicitly praises overcoming obstacles, whereas もかまわず simply states disregard; を押して means deliberately pushing through illness or opposition, and にもかかわらず is an objective 'despite' that does not imply the subject doesn't care.
