This formal, mostly written pattern singles out someone or something as uniquely suited to a role, often in praise or recommendation. It is commonly completed with ほかにいない or ほかにはない, but can also take a rhetorical question.
Do not attach をおいて directly to a verb or adjective; it follows a noun.
Note that a negative ending is not required when the sentence instead asks rhetorically who or what else could fill the role.
- 1.ならではN1「ならでは」means 'unique to...' and usually appears as 「ならではの+noun」 with a neutral register; 「をおいて」is written-style, exclusively singles out one candidate, and must be followed by a negative or rhetorical question. Only 「ならでは...ない」is somewhat close to it, and the two are generally not interchangeable.
- 2.にほかならないN2「にほかならない」is used at the end of a sentence to assert that the essence or cause of something 'is precisely...', and can follow 「こと」「から」「ため」; 「をおいて」attaches only to nouns, picks out the single candidate from its category, and is followed by a negative or rhetorical question. They cannot be directly substituted for each other.
- 3.に限るN2「に限る」meaning '...is best' is a subjective judgment based on experience, works as a sentence-final predicate, can attach to nouns or verbs, and leans conversational; it also has the meaning 'limited to'. 「をおいて」attaches only to nouns, must pair with a negative or rhetorical question, is written-style, and emphasizes uniqueness. They are generally not interchangeable.
- 4.に越したことはないN2「に越したことはない」means '...is naturally best', states a general truth, can attach to verbs, adjectives, or nouns, and is neutral in register; 「をおいて」attaches only to nouns, exclusively singles out one candidate with a negative or rhetorical question, and leans written-style. They cannot be interchanged.
- 5.でなくてなんだろうN1「でなくてなんだろう」uses a rhetorical question to assert 'this is exactly X', with a strong emotional flavor; 「をおいて」focuses on exclusively singling out the one candidate, must be followed by a negative or rhetorical question, and can also be used with neutral or negative content. The two are generally not interchangeable.
ならでは highlights a distinctive quality, while にほかならない and でなくてなんだろう emphatically identify what something is; をおいて instead singles out the sole candidate for a role. に限る presents a best choice, and に越したことはない says something is preferable, without necessarily ruling out every alternative.
