A neutral expression common in both conversation and writing, often used when telling how an interest, career, relationship, or habit started. The main clause typically describes a change or a new beginning, often with ようになる or 始める. を契機に and を機に express a similar idea in a more formal or written style.
Do not attach をきっかけに directly to a verb; nominalize it first with の, as in 結婚したのをきっかけに.
Note that the main clause usually expresses a change or new start, not a simple one-off result or a routine consequence.
Learners should remember that きっかけ is a trigger or starting point, not necessarily the full cause, so it differs from ために or ので.
- 1.を契機にN2「を契機に」has basically the same meaning and attachment as「をきっかけに」and the two are often interchangeable, but it sounds stiff and solemn, appearing mainly in writing, news reports, and speeches, usually after clear milestones such as a job change or an event. In everyday conversation,「をきっかけに」is more natural.
- 2.を機にN1「を機に」is close in meaning to「をきっかけに」and attaches in the same way, so the two can be swapped in most situations. It is, however, more formal and written in tone, carries the nuance of seizing this very opportunity, and is often used at life turning points such as entering school, getting married, or retiring.
- 3.を兼ねてN1「を兼ねて」means that one activity simultaneously serves a second purpose, with both purposes fulfilled within that same activity, and it does not express a cause or a change; it attaches only to nouns, not to「動詞+の」. Since「をきっかけに」emphasizes triggering a subsequent change, the two cannot be interchanged.
- 4.ことからN2「ことから」explains the origin of a name or the basis for a judgment or conclusion, leans toward written style, and requires「である」after a noun; 「をきっかけに」instead refers to an event leading to a change or new action and is neutral in register. The two generally cannot be interchanged.
- 5.に際してN2「に際して」focuses on the very moment an important event arrives and does not stress the changes it causes; it is formal in tone, attaches to the dictionary form (辞書形), and does not attach to the ta-form (た形). Both「結婚に際して転居した」and「結婚をきっかけに転居した」are correct, but they differ in emphasis.
を契機に and を機に share the 'trigger/turning point' meaning but are more formal and written, and を機に often implies a deliberately chosen occasion. を兼ねて means one action serves an additional purpose, ことから gives a reason or basis for a judgment, and に際して means 'on the occasion of / when doing' rather than a trigger for change.
