Used in both speech and writing to state an evaluation or opinion based on a given viewpoint or criterion, often in discussions, explanations, and reports. It usually follows abstract nouns of perspective, such as 立場 and 観点. The sentence then gives a judgment, such as 無理だ or 効果的です.
Learners should avoid attaching から言うと directly to a person; say 彼の立場から言うと rather than 彼から言うと.
Note that the second half should express a judgment or evaluation, not a simple fact or action.
- 1.からすると / からすればN2「からすると」 can also make inferences based on concrete things, as in 「彼の発言からすると…だろう」, and can attach directly to person nouns like 「親」. When expressing a stance or viewpoint (〜の立場/観点), the two are basically interchangeable.
- 2.から見るとN2「から見ると」 can attach directly to person nouns to mean 'in someone's view', as in 「子供から見ると」; it can also make inferences from signs such as facial expressions, often pairing with 「らしい」 or 「ようだ」. When attaching to a stance or viewpoint, the two are roughly interchangeable.
- 3.〜から見ればN2「から見れば」 can attach directly to person nouns (e.g. 「経済学者から見れば」) and can also make inferences based on observed attitudes; 「から言うと」 generally does not attach directly to people. When used with words like 「立場」 or 「観点」, the two are mostly interchangeable.
- 4.にしたらN2「にしたら」 attaches directly to person or organization nouns and guesses at the person's feelings or thoughts, often with 「だろう」; 「から言うと」 attaches to nouns of stance or viewpoint and makes a more objective judgment. 「彼にしたら」 is close to 「彼の立場から言うと」.
- 5.にとってN3「にとって」 attaches directly to person or organization nouns and evaluates something's meaning or value to that party, with the second clause often being words like 「大切だ」 or 「難しい」; 「から言うと」 makes judgments from a standpoint or viewpoint and does not attach directly to a person's name. Their focuses differ, so they should not be simply swapped.
から言うと and からすると/からすれば both state a judgment based on a criterion, but からすると can attach directly to people, and から見ると/から見れば stress looking at something from a viewpoint. にしたら and にとって take a person or entity and describe how things seem or matter to them, rather than giving a viewpoint for judgment.
