Noun (a very short time)+にしてe.g. 「一瞬」「一夜」「一日」
Noun+にして+Nounhaving two roles at once, e.g. 「医者にして作家」
Set phraseNoun+にして初めてonly on reaching that stage does something happen for the first time
Usage

Formal and literary, common in narratives, news writing, biographies and essays. The stage sense pairs naturally with ようやく or はじめて. The short-time sense appears in set expressions like 一瞬にして and 一夜にして, and with わずか or たった it can frame a longer span as surprisingly short. Unlike にしては, it expresses no mismatch with expectations. It simply spotlights the point in time, the brevity of a span, or the combination of roles.

Watch out

Do not confuse it with にしては, which means 'for an X' and signals that the result differs from what X would lead you to expect.

Note that the short-time sense depends on framing: 一夜 is inherently brief, but わずか十年にして presents ten years as remarkably short.

Note that the stage sense typically appears with ようやく or はじめて to stress that the outcome came only at that point.

Easily confused with
  • 1.
〜に至ってN1「に至って」is close to 「にして」only in its 'only when things reach...' sense. What precedes it is an extreme stage after a situation has worsened, and a verb in dictionary form can attach before it; it carries a critical tone of 'it is already too late.' It lacks the meanings 'at the mere age of,' 'in an instant,' and 'being both at once.'
  • 2.
にしてはN3「にしては」means 'for/considering...' and points out that reality differs from what is expected, as in 「60歳にしては若い」; 「にして」has no such contrastive meaning. 「にしては」can attach to nouns, verbs, and adjectives with a neutral register; the two are not interchangeable.
  • 3.
にしたってN1「にしたって」is the colloquial form of 「にしても」, expressing concession 'even if...' or 'even...,' and can attach to verbs, adjectives, and nouns; 「にして」is written-style and attaches only to nouns, so the two cannot be interchanged.
  • 4.
にしてもN2「にしても」expresses concession 'even if...,' or pairs items as in 「AにしてもBにしても」, and can attach to nouns, adjectives, and verbs with a neutral register; 「にして」attaches only to nouns, leans written-style, and differs in meaning, so the two cannot be interchanged.
  • 5.
にあってN1「にあって」emphasizes being in a special period, environment, or position/status, and the circumstances or actions arising from it; 「にして」points to a certain age or stage, something happening in an instant, or holding two identities at once. Both attach to nouns and are written-style, but they cannot be interchanged.

にして marks a notable point in time, a span framed as remarkably short, or two combined roles, whereas 〜に至って means 'upon reaching a certain point or stage (often, but not necessarily, a serious one), only then…' and にしては means 'for an X (unexpectedly)'. にしたって and にしても mean 'even if / even for X', and にあって means 'in (a particular situation or position)'.
