Neutral in register and very common in product descriptions, advertising, publishing, broadcasting, and education, where it labels the intended audience or market. 〜に向けて can also name an audience, as in 子供に向けて書いた本, but it describes the direction of an action and can also mark a goal or event. 向け works as a label on the product itself. Unlike ために, it does not express a general purpose or benefit.
Learners often confuse 向け (made with a specific target in mind) with 向き (suitable for someone, whether or not it was designed that way).
Do not attach 向け directly to verbs; it follows nouns, as in 家族向け or 初心者向け.
Do not insert に before 向け: say 子供向けの本, not 子供に向けの本.
- 〜に向けてN2「〜に向けて」requires 「に」, and to modify a noun use 「に向けた/に向けての」. It is close to 「向け」only when providing things or sending messages to an audience; when it means working and preparing for an upcoming goal or event, it cannot be replaced with 「向け」.
- としてN3「として」expresses identity, capacity, or use (as...), while 「向け」expresses for whom something is made (aimed at...). 「教材として使う」means using something as teaching material, while 「初心者向けの教材」means material made for beginners; they cannot be swapped.
- ためにN3「ために」expresses purpose or reason and can attach to verbs/adjectives or 「noun+の」; 「向け」only attaches to nouns and specifies the target group or market a product or service is locked onto. 「子供のための本」emphasizes being for the children's benefit, while 「子供向けの本」emphasizes the target positioning.
- にとってN3「にとって」evaluates what something means from the standpoint of a person or organization, followed by judgments like 「大切だ」「難しい」; 「向け」states that something is made or provided specifically for a certain group or regional market. The two cannot be interchanged.
- 〜としてのN2「向け」indicates something is made for a certain audience, e.g. 「教師向けの本」means a book intended for teachers to read; 「〜としての」expresses the subject's own identity, e.g. 「教師としての立場」. The two cannot be interchanged.
向け attaches directly to a noun to label the intended audience or market of a product (子供向けの本). 〜に向けて is a verbal phrase that modifies an action, marking either the audience it addresses (子供に向けて書いた) or a goal or event it heads toward. ために expresses purpose or benefit in general, and にとって gives a viewpoint ('from the standpoint of'). として and 〜としての express a role or capacity ('as'), not a target audience.
