Common in both speech and writing. The main clause typically carries an evaluation such as 〜たくない, 〜とは思わない or 〜必要はない, questioning whether the goal justifies the means. Compared with てでも, which shows a determination to achieve something by any means, てまで more often frames the means as excessive and implies it is not worth it.
Learners sometimes read this まで as 'until'; here it means 'even going so far as', marking an extreme means.
Do not attach it to ordinary, easy actions; the action before てまで must be seen as extreme, costly, or undesirable.
Note that the sentence usually needs an evaluative main clause, such as a negative judgment, to sound natural.
- てでもN2「てでも」 expresses positive determination ("even if it means…, I will"), and the main clause is usually a volition, wish or obligation rather than a statement of something that has already happened, whereas 「てまで」 implies that going that far isn't worth it. Because their evaluations point in opposite directions, the two are generally not interchangeable.
- も顧みず / を顧みずN1「も顧みず」 follows a noun or verb + の and means pressing on despite knowing the danger or opposition; it is a written expression and can be approving or critical depending on context. 「てまで」 centers on the speaker's sense that the cost is excessive and is usually followed by a negative clause, so the two shouldn't be swapped.
- をよそにN1「をよそに」 takes surrounding worries, opposition or outside circumstances as its first part and means ignoring them; it follows a noun or verb + の and is a written expression. 「てまで」 instead takes what someone does to achieve a goal and stresses that the cost is excessive, so they cannot be interchanged.
- もかまわずN2「もかまわず」 follows a noun or verb + の and means carrying on regardless of onlookers, others' attempts to stop you or the trouble it causes, with the emphasis on not caring. 「てまで」 focuses on paying an excessive price for a goal, and its main clause is usually negative or skeptical, so the two are not interchangeable.
- を押してN1「を押して」 takes only nouns for obstacles such as opposition or illness and means persisting in spite of these adverse conditions; it is a written expression that usually conveys admiration. In 「てまで」, the first part is a cost the speaker considers excessive and the tone is usually negative or critical, so they cannot be interchanged.
てでも stresses resolve to succeed by any means, while てまで typically questions whether an extreme means is worth it. も顧みず/を顧みず, をよそに, もかまわず and を押して attach to nouns and describe disregarding or pushing past danger, others' concerns, or obstacles such as illness, whereas てまで attaches to a verb and highlights the extreme action itself taken as a means.
