Usage

Primarily conversational, っぽい describes impressions of people, things, clothing, and opinions; it can sound mildly critical, but need not be negative. For a tendency, it can describe a person's disposition rather than just the frequency of an event.

Watch out

Do not replace っぽい mechanically with らしい, ようだ, or のような in formal contexts; they do not always express the same meaning.

Note that っぽい conjugates like an い形容詞: おばさんっぽく見える uses its adverbial form.

Easily confused with
  • らしいN4As a suffix, らしい means living up to the typical qualities of something (子供らしい: having the qualities a child should have), while っぽい only means having that trait and often sounds negative. For conjecture, らしい is based on hearsay or signs, is neutral in register, and is more formal than っぽい.
  • みたいだN4みたいだ expresses metaphor or conjecture and conjugates like a な-adjective. It overlaps with っぽい only in the sense of looking like something and in casual conjecture, so 忘れっぽい and 白っぽい cannot be replaced with みたいだ.
  • げN2げ is rather literary, conjugates like a な-adjective, and attaches to adjective stems and similar forms, mainly emotion adjectives, and also appears in forms like たげ and ありげ. It describes the feeling or state that shows in another person's expression or behavior, as in 寂しげ and 言いたげ, and is generally not interchangeable with っぽい.
  • ぎみN3ぎみ means an undesirable state or trend has slightly set in, is neutral in register, and is followed by だ or の, whereas っぽい focuses on a trait or tendency. 疲れぎみ means being a bit tired right now and 疲れっぽい means tiring easily, so they are not interchangeable.
  • がちN3がち overlaps with っぽい only in the sense of being prone to something; it stresses that a situation keeps recurring and has become a tendency, usually carries a negative judgment, and is not limited to personality. It conjugates like a な-adjective, is neutral in register, and can also attach to nouns, as in 病気がち.

らしい can express qualities typical of a category, while みたいだ expresses resemblance or conjecture; っぽい often suggests a perceived quality or tendency. げ points to an emotion apparent in someone's manner, ぎみ to a slight condition, and がち to something that happens frequently rather than a disposition.
