Found mainly in writing, narration, and formal speech. It is common in texts about folklore, history, culture, and personal recollection, and in news or commentary about rumors, troubles, or doubts surrounding someone or something. It suggests things that have grown up around a topic and cling to it, rather than naming a neutral subject. For plain 'about/concerning' in documents, research, or inquiries, に関する or について is more natural.
Learners should not use にまつわる for neutral informational topics, such as meeting materials or survey questions. Use に関する there.
Note that にまつわる typically modifies a following noun and is not normally used as a sentence-final predicate.
- 1.に関する / に関してN3「にまつわる」 emphasizes the legends, memories, and disputes that something brings in its wake; 「に関する」 is more neutral and broadly covers related aspects, and the two are often interchangeable when modifying nouns, though the sense of entanglement is lost. 「に関して」 works as an adverbial, while 「にまつわる」 does not.
- 2.についてN3「について」 is neutral in register and can attach directly to verbs like 「話す」, whereas 「にまつわる」 leans toward written style and only modifies nouns. When modifying a noun, 「についての」 can often be substituted, but the close sense of connection flowing from that thing is lost.
- 3.をめぐってN2「をめぐって」 stresses something becoming the focal point of debate or dispute among multiple parties; it can be used adverbially to introduce a following action, and 「をめぐる」 can modify nouns. 「にまつわる」 only modifies nouns and is more natural for telling of the legends, memories, and so on that stem from something.
- 4.に関わるN2「に関わる」 emphasizes 'concerning or affecting' something, often attaching to weighty matters like 「命」 or 「将来」, and can also broadly mean 'involve'; it works as a predicate or in the form 「に関わって」. 「にまつわる」 only modifies nouns, referring to the legends, disputes, and the like that something brings in its wake, so the two are generally not interchangeable.
- 5.を中心にN3「を中心に」 makes a place, group of people, or topic the center and spreads out from there, without meaning 'related to'; it can modify verbs, takes the attributive form 「を中心とした」, and is neutral in register. 「にまつわる」 only modifies nouns and leans toward written style, so the two cannot be swapped.
Unlike the neutral, broad に関する/に関して and について ('about, concerning'), にまつわる evokes stories, rumors, troubles, or questions that surround something and cling to it. をめぐって implies debate or conflict centering on an issue, に関わる stresses that something affects or bears on a matter (often a serious one), and を中心に marks a central focus or core.
