A somewhat formal expression common in news, reports, and written explanations describing the duration or extent of events, research, damage, and similar matters. It stresses that the whole span is covered and that the span is notably large. にかけて marks a rough stretch from one point to another, while にわたって highlights the full extent.
Note that にわたって implies a notably long or wide span, so it sounds odd with trivial durations or very small areas.
Learners should use にわたる or にわたった, not にわたって, when the pattern directly modifies a following noun.
Do not attach it to a single point in time; it requires a span, duration, range, or number of times.
- 1.にかけてN3「にかけて」 expresses only a rough range and does not stress length or breadth; it usually pairs with 「から」, which can be left out when the starting point is clear (明日にかけて), but it cannot attach directly to duration words like 「5時間」. The "when it comes to..." meaning belongs to the separate pattern 「にかけては」, a usage 「にわたって」 lacks.
- 2.を通じて / を通してN2When 「を通じて」 covers a whole period it is close to 「にわたって」, but it stresses that something holds from start to finish rather than emphasizing long duration or wide range. It also means 'through / by way of (a medium)' in a neutral register, and takes the form 「を通じての」 when modifying a noun.
- 3.中N3When read 「じゅう」, 「中」 also refers to a whole period or range, but it works as a suffix in words like 「一日中」 and is neutral in tone, whereas 「にわたって」 is more written-formal and stresses long duration and wide range. 「中」 can also mean 'in progress' or 'within a set period.'
- 4.において / におけるN3「において」 merely marks the place, time, or field where something occurs — the written equivalent of 「で」 — while 「にわたって」 stresses covering an entire period or range, with the nuance of long duration and wide extent. The two are generally not interchangeable.
- 5.末にN2「にわたって」 describes the period over which an action continues or the range it extends across, while 「末に」 describes the final outcome after a long process, attaching to a verb in the た form or to 「名詞の」. They cannot be swapped, but they can combine, as in 「長年にわたる交渉の末に」.
Unlike にかけて (a rough stretch from A to B), 中 (simply 'during'), and を通じて / を通して ('throughout a period', or 'by means of'), にわたって stresses that the full, sizable extent is covered. において / における marks the setting where something happens rather than its extent, and 末に marks a result reached after a long process.
