Neutral in register and very common in daily speech, signs and notices, such as 営業中, 工事中 and 使用中. The じゅう reading of 'throughout' stresses completeness across time or space, while 今日中に or 今週中に sets a deadline within the period. Unlike 間に, which marks a span during which something else happens, 中 labels the whole span, an ongoing state, or a deadline period.
Learners often read 今日中に as 'throughout today,' but it means 'by the end of today,' a deadline within the period.
Note that 午前中 is read ちゅう, while 一日中 and 今日中 are read じゅう; period nouns do not share one reading.
Do not insert の before 中 in these compounds; 会議の中 means 'inside the meeting,' not 'in a meeting.'
- 最中にN3Only the ちゅう reading of 「中」, meaning something in progress, is close to 「最中に」: 「中」 attaches directly to action nouns and states the situation objectively, while 「最中に」 attaches to 「名詞+の」 or the 「ている」 form and emphasizes that an ongoing action is often interrupted by an unexpected event.
- 中をN2「中を」 is read なか and can attach to 「名詞+の」, adjectives, or verbs in plain form, describing acting in conditions like rain or snow, or someone doing something despite being busy; 「中」 only attaches directly to nouns and never to verbs, so the two cannot be swapped.
- 途中に / 途中でN3「途中に/途中で」 focuses on a midpoint in a process, often introducing something that happens partway or an interruption, and can also mean 'on the way to...'; it attaches to 「名詞+の」 or verbs, whereas 「中」 read ちゅう attaches directly to nouns and objectively indicates something is in progress.
- 間にN4「中」 attaches directly to nouns, while 「間に」 can attach to verbs, adjectives, or 「名詞+の」; 「間に」 indicates that something happens or is completed at some point within a period, unlike 「一日中」 which spans the whole period, though it is close in meaning to 「今週中に」 when expressing a deadline.
- において / におけるN3「において」 is written-style and indicates place, occasion, time, or field, while 「中」 forms compound words expressing an entire range, an ongoing state, or a deadline, with a neutral register; 「会議において」 means 'at the meeting', while 「会議中」 means the meeting is in progress.
最中に stresses being right in the midst of an action, often when something interrupts it, and 途中で means partway through a process or en route. 中を describes carrying on within surrounding circumstances (雨の中を), 間に marks a span during which another event occurs, and において is a formal 'in/at' for places and fields.
