A formal, written expression common in news reports, official statements, and analyses. It is frequently paired with adverbs such as ついに or ようやく to stress that the outcome came at the end of a long course of events. Unlike 末に, which highlights the process, に至る focuses on the endpoint that was reached.
Note that in casual talk about minor everyday outcomes に至る sounds overly weighty; it fits formal or reflective accounts of how a result arose.
Note that the endpoint is marked with に, not を; say 倒産に至った, never 倒産を至った.
Learners should not confuse the sentence-final に至る with the connective forms に至って, に至っても, and に至っては, which have different meanings.
- 〜に至ってN1「に至って」cannot end a sentence; it must be followed by a continuation, often pairing with 「ようやく」 or 「初めて」 to indicate that only at an extreme stage does a belated action or realization occur. 「に至る」 simply states the result, conclusion, or place reached, with no 'only then' nuance.
- に至ってもN1「に至る」 means finally reaching a result, a state of affairs, or a place, with no concessive meaning. 「に至っても」 means 'even after reaching..., still...', where the following clause describes an unchanged situation, often with dissatisfaction or blame. They cannot be swapped.
- に至ってはN1「に至っては」 attaches only to nouns and picks out the most extreme example of its kind, usually with a negative evaluation. 「に至る」 attaches to nouns or the dictionary form of verbs and means finally reaching a point, drawing a conclusion, or leading to a place. They cannot be swapped.
- に至るまでN1「に至るまで」 does not express a result; it cites the smallest or most extreme item at the end of a range, emphasizing 'even...' or 'everything from A to B', and is followed by comprehensive statements like 「すべて」. It cannot be swapped with 「に至る」.
- 末にN2「末に」 attaches to a process (verb た form / noun + の) and stresses that the process was long and winding, with the result in the following clause. 「に至る」 attaches to the result itself, focusing on the point reached, and can also express arrival at a place. They are often used together: 「交渉の末に合意に至った」.
に至る states that an endpoint was reached, whereas 〜に至って means 'only when things reached X (did something happen)', に至っても means 'even after reaching X', に至っては singles out an extreme case ('as for X'), and に至るまで marks the far limit of a range ('even down to X'). 末に, by contrast, emphasizes the long process ('after much X') that precedes a result.
