A formal, mostly written pattern used in reports, descriptions and commentary. It stresses how thorough or widespread something is, or how far a range extends. The noun marks the far end of the range, such as a small detail, the highest rank, or the present day. The clause that follows often summarizes with words like すべて. Unlike さえ or すら, which pick out a single surprising item, に至るまで frames that item as the endpoint of a whole range.
Note that with non-time nouns the endpoint is usually felt as extreme or unexpected, though plain time endpoints like 現在 are fine.
Learners sometimes confuse it with に至っては, which singles out one especially extreme case rather than covering a whole range.
Note that this pattern sounds stiff in casual conversation, where まで alone is more natural.
- 1.に至る / に至ったN1「に至る / に至った」acts as a predicate or noun modifier, indicating that a process finally reaches a result or conclusion, or that something leads to a place in space; 「に至るまで」instead names the far end of a range to stress 'even ...', so the two are not interchangeable.
- 2.に至ってはN1「に至っては」picks out the most extreme case of its kind and comments on it, usually with a negative tone, and the general situation must be stated first; 「に至るまで」instead folds the extreme item into the overall range, stressing that everything is covered without exception. The two are not interchangeable.
- 3.にわたってN2「にわたって」attaches to nouns of period or scope and stresses a long duration or wide range; 「に至るまで」cites a small or extreme end-point item and stresses that even it is no exception. They are close only when 「AからB〜」expresses a range; the 'even ...' sense cannot be swapped.
- 4.(で)すらN1「すら」cites just one extreme example to imply the rest goes without saying, often with a nuance of surprise or dissatisfaction, and it can also attach to the て-form and ます-form; 「に至るまで」stresses that the range extends to the far end with everything included, and can be used as 「AからBに至るまで」.
- 5.はおろかN1「はおろか」first names a demanding X and then says that even the more basic Y fails, with the second item usually a negation or something negative, and it often pairs with 「すら」and 「さえ」; 「に至るまで」names the end of a range and stresses total inclusion, without being limited to negative contexts. The two generally cannot be interchanged.
- 6.さえN3「さえ」cites one extreme or bare-minimum example to extend to the rest, often pairs with negation, and is common in both speech and writing; 「に至るまで」stresses that the range extends all the way to the end with no exceptions, can be phrased 「AからBに至るまで」, and leans toward written style.
に至る/に至った states that a situation reached a certain stage or result, に至っては singles out one extreme, often negative case, and にわたって describes extent over time or space. (で)すら and さえ mark a single surprising item without a range, and はおろか means 'let alone', usually in negative contexts, whereas に至るまで stresses that a range reaches all the way to its endpoint.
