Neutral in register, it appears in everyday conversation and in writing whenever you name the top member of a group, most often a group of three or more. It usually sets up a superlative with 一番, and questions ask which member ranks highest using 誰, 何, どれ, and similar words. It marks the set being compared, not a physical or formal setting.
Note that AとBとどちらが〜 is the usual frame for two named items, and の中で most often marks a group of three or more.
Learners sometimes use は after 誰 or 何. Question words take が, and the chosen item usually takes が unless it is the topic or contrasted.
Note that 中 is read なか in this pattern, not ちゅう.
- 1.において / におけるN3「において」is the written-language equivalent of 「で」, marking the place, time, or field of an event; when it modifies a noun, use 「における」. It can also set the scope of a comparison, as in 「クラスにおいて最も」, but it is very formal — everyday comparisons take 「の中で」.
- 2.にわたってN2「の中で」means comparing and choosing within a group, or being inside a space or situation, while 「にわたって」, as in 「5時間にわたって」, stresses that an action or state extends over a long time or a wide range and is used mostly in writing. The two cannot be interchanged.
- 3.を中心にN3「の中で」confines the scope to the inside of something, used to compare and choose from within it or to express being in a space or situation, whereas 「を中心に」marks the core or focus and implies extension to the surroundings or other things. The two cannot be interchanged.
- 4.間にN4「間に」means something happens during a period of time or is completed before it ends; 「の中で」in its comparing-and-choosing sense cannot be replaced with it. When referring to the inside of a situation, however, the two can overlap, as in 「会議の中で/会議の間に」— the former stresses the setting, the latter the time span.
- 5.にかけてN3「にかけて」, in the pattern 「〜から〜にかけて」, indicates the time or spatial range over which something occurs and is not used to compare and pick the best; the "when it comes to..." meaning that praises ability belongs to the separate pattern 「にかけては」. Neither can be interchanged with 「の中で」.
の中で picks out one member of a group or range, usually with 一番. By contrast, において/における formally marks the setting where something happens, にわたって and にかけて describe something extending across a span or from one point to another, を中心に means "centering on", and 間に marks a time interval during which something occurs.
