Usually stresses that a single event can wipe out everything built up before, often after せっかく〜ても or 〜のに, as in both examples. In the second sense, set phrases like そう言えばそれまでだ close off a discussion, often hinting that the remark oversimplifies. It appears in both speech and writing with a resigned or cautionary tone. Unlike たら最後, which looks ahead to an unstoppable bad outcome, it looks back at what is lost.
Note that それまで here means 'that is the end of it,' not 'until then' or 'up to that point.'
Learners should put the decisive, ruining event in the ば-clause, not the wasted effort, when using the 'all for nothing' sense.
Do not use the 'all for nothing' sense for good outcomes; it signals that earlier effort or gain is lost.
- たら最後 / たが最後N1「たら最後」attaches only to the verb た-form and can introduce a following clause or end with「たら最後だ」, stressing irreversible negative consequences once something is triggered. Unlike「ばそれまでだ」, it does not refer to wasted prior effort and has no「と言ってしまえば」usage.
- が最後N1「が最後」attaches only to the verb た-form, is used mid-sentence, and is followed by a state one cannot escape once the action is done; it leans literary.「ばそれまでだ」is used at the end of a sentence and means prior efforts are wasted or the topic ends there, so the two are not interchangeable.
- たところでN1「たところで」says that even doing the first action is pointless—the futile thing is the first action itself; it attaches only to the た-form and is followed by a negative or pessimistic conjecture.「ばそれまでだ」means that once the first situation arises, prior efforts are void. Not interchangeable.
- ても始まらないN3「ても始まらない」attaches to the て-form (colloquially「たって」) and says that regretting or panicking is useless; it is colloquial and often used to advise someone.「ばそれまでだ」means that once a certain situation arises, prior efforts are wasted, or that a certain remark ends the discussion. Not interchangeable.
- てもどうにもならないN1「てもどうにもならない」is concessive, meaning the situation cannot be turned around even with the first clause.「ばそれまでだ」is conditional, meaning that once the first clause occurs, prior efforts are wasted, or that with such a remark the topic ends there. Not interchangeable.
たら最後/たが最後 and が最後 stress that once X happens, an irreversible bad situation inevitably follows, while ばそれまでだ stresses that everything before X is rendered meaningless. たところで, ても始まらない and てもどうにもならない say that doing some action is futile or won't help, rather than that a certain event ends or cancels what came before.
